Steven Seagal - Best versions

Post by chenlung »

Hi guys

Can you tell me and 100% confirm the best versions of these movies (for completeness) on DVD:

Above the Law (aka 'Nico').
Marked for Death.
Under Siege.
Under Siege 2.
Glimmer Man.
Hard to Kill.
On Deadly Ground.
Executive Decision.

DVD Compare may not have correct details so I've already tried there  . MPAA may have made some dodgy edits too.

'Jerzy' on DVD Compare forum:

"Something I did notice as an obvious MPAA imposed cut was in 'Glimmer Man' during the autopsy scene where Seagal picks up the scalpel, and then the scene quickly cuts to him holding a silicone breast implant, the sequence of him cutting into the body and removing the implant having very obviously been removed.

Also, it seems to me the 'throat-slitting' scene of the young priest in 'Above the Law' seems to have suffered MPAA intervention, as you neither see what happens to him, and he simply vanishes from sight, never to be seen again...it's unclear whether he was killed or not, but one must assume he was."

Can you make sure that these movies aren't cut in the R1?

UK 'Under Siege' and 'On Deadly Ground' are cut.

Never realised R1 'Marked for Death' was non-anamorphic so I'll get the French/Dutch version for sure.

Doesn't appear to be anything wrong with R1 'Executive Decision' unless it has unnoted cuts?

Thanks for your help guys :P .

You do have to remember that many MPAA cuts made to films never saw a cinema and are often never restored - see the Friday The 13th series

I seem to recall that cut being present on the R2 also.

If the MPAA made these cuts then they will prevail in every version. The American prints are always the most complete, except for Under Siege 2's Canadian theatrical release, which was uncensored, but never put on DVD.
UK 'Under Siege' and 'On Deadly Ground' are cut.
Yes, by 0:07 (though I timed it as a few secs longer) and 1:10, respectively. For some reason ODG and HTK were never released on DVD in the UK. I saw a rogue copy of ODG once in a small store in London with a '12' cert (!)

Right. That's the one I have.

No cuts that I know of.

Take 'Hard Target', MPAA gnawed their way through that yet UK audiences got a more complete print (one cut however: Jean Claude turning around before shooting the last guy before facing Lance himself). So there is possibility of non-US versions having longer versions.

So you are saying the UK version is missing this autopsy scene too?

I think my list (for most movies) is now:

Glimmer Man = US DVD (if nowhere else is uncut).
Marked for Death = French/Dutch DVD.
Under Siege = US DVD.
Under Siege 2 = US DVD (if nowhere else is uncut).
Fire Down Below = UK.
Above the Law = US DVD (if nowhere else is uncut).

The German DVD is said to be uncut according to IMDB if that compares to a MPAA cut US version.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen that international versions are longer, just not in Seagal's case. All the R1 versions are as long they (currently) get.

I seem to recall it jumping at the bit you mentioned where they cut open the breast.
The European (non-UK) releases are nearly always uncut.

Yeah, not only was it boring as fuck but the heavy-handed pro-environment hippy message was fucking lame.

I thought the environmental conscience was admirable. It's a mediocre film, for sure, but at least it seemed to have a point of view beyond wrist snapping, however blunt.
