Post by EvaUnit02 »

Source: HTF.
Warner Home Video has officially announced Superman Returns which stars Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, and Kevin Spacey. The film will be available to own in single ($28.98) and double-disc ($34.99) editions from the 28th November. Each will carry a 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track. As far as we know, the single-disc will be featureless, whereas the two-disc edition will include deleted scenes, along with Requiem for Krypton: Making Superman Returns - a comprehensive 3-hour documentary that takes you behind the scenes onto the set of Superman Returns.
Spec list from Ezydvd. Ezydvd are giving it a tin release with better coverart than the R1:-
* Requiem for Krypton: Making Superman Returns
* Secret Origins and First Issues: Crystallizing Superman
* The Crystal Method: Designing Superman
* An Affinity for Beachfront Property: Shooting Superman – Superman on the Farm
* An Affinity for Beachfront Property: Shooting Superman – Superman in the City
* An Affinity for Beachfront Property: Shooting Superman – Superman in Trouble
* The Joy of Lex: Menacing Superman
* Wrapping Superman
* Deleted Scenes (includes audio introduction from director Bryan Singer)
* Teaser Trailer
* Theatrical Trailer
* Electronic Arts Game Trailer

Top stuff. It's definitely the 2 discer for me; I prefer the 1 disc cover.

Where's the commentary? Pity about the lack of DTS.

I really enjoyed it, a bit flawed but not hugely. Oddly X-Men 2 was more fun but this was better made, and hung together better. I'm looking forward to a sequel.

The Tin is tempting but too much. Do Tins have to have the censor rating too?

No, Ezydvd tins don't have any ratings logos.
You would know this if you had bothered to look up the Ezydvd entry. Honestly, for once take the initiative and look up these things yourself instead of asking for easily available answers.

Since when were e-tailors pictures completely accurate? I did click on the link btw.

p.s - I'd have thought they'd have to.

Don't know, they didn't have a Nolan commentary on Batman Begins either and he had recorded one for every one of his past films.

I don't think Singer really likes commentaries.

You didn't mention the HD-DVD version will be Combo:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=62854

IF the HD-DVD Combo is:

1. Dual layer on the DVD side
2. Has all the extras
3. Isn't much more than the DVD version, the RRP is only 5 bucks more so assuming the DVD side is the same I'm all over it.

I'll pick it up; even if HD-DVD dies I may as well future proof myself. I'm planning to get Superman Returns anyway.

The case being HD shaped will make it look like a DVD LE :D

The idea you're effectively getting a HD-DVD disc (Combo: $39.99) as well as the DVD version ($34.99) for only 5 bucks more is awesome.

Assuming the the Combo also gets the 2 disc DVD extras that is.

He does a lot :) I have listened to all of his, he is very good at it.

I am not buying this shit dvd, as its obvious a new extended cut with more extras and a commentary is coming along. (and the $20 million begining and middle scenes put back in!!! 20 million for god sake wasted on the cutting room floor)

It pissed all over X Men 3!i n every single way, apart from the fact I was looking forward to X Men 3 more :( how disapointing is that. Singer is a traitor and has ruined the X Men franchise by deserting!

Fact of the day

BEASTMASTER'S Mark Singer IS X Men 1 and 2 Director Bryan (Yes I am Gay) Singers COUSIN :) also starred in the classic miniseries V

Fair enough. I remember Singer saying he was uncomfortable doing the X-Men one but that's probably just because it was his first.
romerojpg wrote:I am not buying this shit dvd, as its obvious a new extended cut with more extras and a commentary is coming along.
Yawn, where's my violin? If a considerably better version comes I'll upgrade simple. It's not like I upgrade that many DVDs anyway.

The extras here already look decent, unlike the King Kong one. You said exactly the same about Terminator 3 and 21 Grams, yep those have big ass Special Editions don't they :D

Sure it happens but not half as much as people think it does or is planned.
romerojpg wrote:and the $20 million begining and middle scenes put back in!!! 20 million for god sake wasted on the cutting room floor
Any links? What was included?
romerojpg wrote:It pissed all over X Men 3!i n every single way, apart from the fact I was looking forward to X Men 3 more :( how disapointing is that.
For me X-Men 3 was oddly more fun as Superman Returns didn't have enough action scenes but otherwise agreed it was great, if a bit flawed. Personally I liked and will own both, both are flawed but agreed Superman Returns definitely holds together better.
romerojpg wrote:Singer is a traitor and has ruined the X Men franchise by deserting!
He's a traitor for making two X-Men films and then moving on, right o-kay! It's not Singer's fault Fox went with Ratner, blame Fox if you want to blame someone.
romerojpg wrote:Director Bryan (Yes I am Gay) Singers
What's that supposed to mean? He's never hidden the fact he's gay and frankly big deal, it's not like he shakes his cock in every straight man's face.

Fact of the day: You'd never have said "Brett (Yes I am Straight) Ratner" so why say "Bryan (Yes I am Gay) Singer"???

All the extras would be on the HD-DVD side for sure. You really think that there'll be "3-hours worth of Exclusive In-Depth Documentaries" AND the 2.5hr movie on one DVD-9? If you purchase this, then don't expect to be able to view the extras until you buy an HD-DVD player.

The whole begining of the film was cut, Superman went to Krypton and expored his homeworld, this scene alone cost $10 million!!!!!!! Singer says he is keeping it for part 2!!!! but as the films not going to get a sequel thats never going to be seen.

I said Gay about Singer as many people dont know, simple as that. I think its interesting to know some big directors dont have to be the same as everyone else and obviously it doesnt hurt their carear if they come out, so many more should as well who wont admit it.

I didnt say anything about Terminator 3 getting a new dvd ever, and 21 Grames I didnt say it about that either, I said the director doesnt want it and its probibly never going to get any better thats why I bought the 1st release with no extras as I knew it wouldnt get much better than it already was.

I am right 99% of the time with regards to double dipping dvds, as my colection shows as I wait and the come all the time. Unless I cannot be arsed like The Transporter 2, which will be getting a far better release one day in region 1 I am sure of that.

Singer laid all the groundwork for The X Men films and had the power behind him to follow thru with the groundwork, when he left, the studio stepped in and whoever took over from him had all their power took away from them and they were not allowed to follow thru with Singers origanal vision, hense Singer ruined the X Men Franschise. As if he had stayed, they would have been allowed to do what they set out to do (part 3 was more eipic and less ignorant and many charecters were to be wiped out), he left and that all fell apart. Nothing to do with Ratner at all, who didnt do a bad job at directing it, he was boned in the ass before the film was even started with the hack script forced on him. He isnt a hack directr, its the script which ruined the film, adding too many shit new cast members and charecters who did frankly bugger all and ruined the film. The orignal script was to be far, far better and less shitty.

The final spec. is up at The Digital Bits:

Yep this has now been confirmed. I was hoping for a 2 Disc release with some kind of DVD only or Combo combination for 2 disc.

Which brings me nicely to my rant :D  (taken from my source above) -

"ALL Two-Disc DVD features will be included on the HD side, but NOT in high-definition - movie-only on the standard DVD side"

So NO extras on the DVD Side??? The whole point in Combo is an upgrade path so you buy the disc for your DVD player and when you're ready you can watch the HD-DVD side.

This just means cramming all the extras on to the HD30 side (maybe not an issue as they are only SD) and zip extras on the DVD side. I can see why they've done this as it would mean 2 discs if they wanted DVD compatible extras. What's wrong with that??? 2 Disc releases sell better than 1 disc versions.

I suspect it's more the case of WB not wanting to include standard DVDs along with HD-DVDs.

I was all set to go the Combo path (it really makes sense) but this balls up has meant I'll be getting the 2 Disc DVD version instead.

What's the point in a HD-DVD Combo if it's marketed at the HD-DVD market?

Thanks.

You know for sure there won't be a sequel?

I still want to know how he was supposed to get to Krypton when it's the sun that gives him his powers :D , I'm sure the sun's heat won't reach 1000s of miles away.
I didnt say anything about Terminator 3 getting a new dvd ever, and 21 Grames I didnt say it about that either
Okay if you want to live in denial don't let me stop you :D . It's good to see your selective memory on what you have and haven't said is still intact

I've no doubt there's a possibility of a Superman Returns: Extended Cut but nothing is confirmed (like say Kong Kong where the clues were enormous). In other words it's all guess work. Virtually every big budget release someone says "I'm not getting this as a better DVD will come" yet in reality this is simply not the case.

You may not have said anything about Terminator 3 but many, many people did and as yet nothing.

p.s - Your beef with X-Men 3 should be directed at Fox for not allowing the new director to continue where Singer started.

Yup the science about Superman was bad, the whole sun thing is silly. What did he eat, drink and do for his many years in space! with no super powers he would die, simple. How did he visit the planet? did he wear a space suit :D the questions are endless. They may be answered in that begining scene I guess, but I seriously doubt that.

A sequal, well at the moment its being counted up as a major disapointment and hey its probibly lost cash.

But we all know this means nothing at all, the dvd sales will be massive and I think there may be a sequel posability thats for sure, its really hard to say whats going to happen.

I just know it was a waste of cash making Superman Returns, the most expensive film ever and it didnt look it at all, thats what got to me most. If Hulk can get a sequel (which comes in 2008) then Superman can easily get one, and hell they will save on cash as they already filmed big scenes and cut them out of the 1st film! so they saved millions already :D

I dont mind the T3 dvd, its got plenty of extras and 2 superb commentaires :) still it needs a good 3 hour documentary mind you :D

Here's the Thedigitalbits specs, since Brad couldn't be arsed quoting them:-
Okay... you've been waiting for it, and it's FINALLY here. Warner has just officially announced the DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns on 11/28, the exact street date we've been expecting for months now. Here are the official details of the versions that will be available:

[Editor's Note: We're taking directly with Warner reps to get as accurate and exact a list of specs & special features as possible. New information is being added regularly.]

Single-Disc DVD - SRP $28.98 (available in both full frame and 2:40:1 anamorphic widescreen versions) - 2006 Theatrical Version of the film, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio (English, Latin Spanish), no special features, subtitles: English SDH, English, French and Spanish, Closed Captioned

Two-Disc Special Edition DVD - SRP $34.99 (featuring embossed gold foil packaging - some retailers will offer exclusive lenticular hologram packaging) - 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen video, 2006 Theatrical Version of the film, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio (English, Latin Spanish), includes the 7-part/172-minute documentary Requiem for Krypton: Making Superman Returns (16x9 - broken into Secret Origins and First Issues, The Crystal Method, An Affinity for Beach-front Property: Shooting Superman - Part A: Superman on the Farm, An Affinity for Beach-front Property: Shooting Superman - Part B: Superman in the City, An Affinity for Beach-front Property: Shooting Superman - Part C: Superman in Peril, The Joy of Lex: Menacing Superman and Wrapping Superman - note that the documentary also includes outtakes and bloopers over the credits), the Resurrecting Jor-El featurette, 11 deleted scenes (16x9 - all finished and mixed by Singer, including The Date, Family Photos, Crash Landing/X-ray Vision!, Old Newspapers, Are You Two Dating?, Martinis and Wigs, I'm Always Right, Jimmy the Lush, Language Barrier, Crystal Feet and New Krypton) and an Easter egg (How Wrong Can You Be? - Kevin Spacey's "Wrong!" outtakes), theatrical trailers, EA videogame promo trailer, subtitles: English SDH, English, French and Spanish, Closed Captioned

DVD/HD-DVD Combo - SRP $39.99 - disc config: HD-30C (this is confirmed - 30/9), VC-1/1080p video (2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen), 2006 Theatrical Version of the film, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 (English, French, Latin Spanish) and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English) audio, special features (ALL Two-Disc DVD features will be included on the HD side, but NOT in high-definition - movie-only on the standard DVD side), subtitles: English SDH, English, French and Spanish, Closed Captioned
Hints of a further SE, possibly extended (IME=In Movie Experience BTW, what may replace audio commentaries for the HD formats):-
I've confirmed that most of the bonus footage was shot high-def originally - as well as adding the IME commentary that director Bryan Singer has mentioned in press interviews that he's helped create. Warner's press releases are also careful to note that the film is the 2006 Theatrical Version. Could this mean a more elaborate Director's Cut with IME is being planned for release down the line?

Do your homework. Blu-ray doesn't (yet) support IME, so it's likely to only replace it for HD-DVD and so far not all studios are using it.

I hear it's really good.

You know very well the nature of the digitalbits website. The "mailing list digest"-esque structure is unfriendly towards direct-links standing the test of time. All the news pieces pushed onto one page, with older pieces being pushed into the archives (unlike like say DVDtimes and active where each news piece is stored on an individual web document).

Say Forum Member B has been out-of-the-loop for a while and wants to read up on the Superman DVD news, he clicks the link in the thread that points to thedigitalbits but has to trawl through their archive to find the referenced news piece.

Touche, but TBH I don't really care at this point in time. Will be a number of years before I get an HD player. Hopefully by then there'll be a clear winner of the format war or at least dual-format players. I'll probably end up with game consoles capable of playing both formats anyway (I'll have to buy an Xbox 360 about a year from now and a PS3 somewhere down the road).

To be fair you had to be told by Michael Mackenzie bout Blu-ray not doing IME.

Fair point, it is indeed badly formatted. Not as bad as DVD Beaver which looks like it's been designed by someone with an hours HTML skills.

In theory the "#srfinal" should mean it continues to link correctly.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Touche, but TBH I don't really care at this point in time. Will be a number of years before I get an HD player. Hopefully by then there'll be a clear winner of the format war or at least dual-format players.
Me too, exactly. I'm still going to pay attention to HD-DVD Combos if it's a 1 Disc DVD release as these seem to get the extras on both sides (seeing as they're just reusing the DVD anyway).

So far Superman Returns was the only HD-DVD Film I'm interested in. If it had been a 1 Disc release I'd ironically have got what I was after.

I only cared while I was hoping for a 2 Disc HD-DVD Combo as that makes LOTS of sense (the RRP is only 5 bucks more). Frankly the extras should've been put on a second DVD disc.

We know 2 Disc releases sell better, the extras are SD on the HD-DVD or on a separate DVD and both HD-DVD & DVD Players can play them. It's all politics preventing this method.

Hell they could've given us the exact same HD-DVD Combo and thrown disc 2 in from the DVD set, charge a few bucks more and you're done. This would be perfect.

Talking about console games was clearly more interesting than discussing some overblown mediocre film made by Singer.

Singer hasn't done anything decent since Apt Pupil, probably becuz of his Gay Jewness.

Fair enough. I happen to disagree but fair enough.

Speaking of X-Men, X2 and Superman Returns you're the only person who has noticed any gay undertones AFAIK. I've not read one review which even slightly mentioned them. I've read reviews which said Superman Returns has big Christ undertones but not gay ones.

I suspected the R3 would mimic the 2 Disc SE versions, it's nice to see the better R1 1 Disc cover art is making it's way to the R3 2 Disc version.

I'm just waiting for the identical R3 Superman SE and Superman 2 SE's, and I'll be set. I hope the Superman 2 R3 is also 3 Discs like the UK Set!
