James Bond UE comparisons: Anyone seen this???

Post by captainjoe »

There's a whole bunch of comparisons for all the Bond films including many that aren't anywhere else. Just click on the title and the pages come up. It's a German site but you get the idea.

You have to click on each image for the 2006 image to appear. It's useful.

Quality link cheers. I'll move it to Comparisons.

It does show the Brosnan Bonds were pretty much a waste of time. Transfers virtually the same (worse in the case of TND), barely better DTS and flimsy new extras.

Based on those caps:

2006:
Dr. No
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball
Live and Let Die
Diamonds Are Forever
The Man With the Golden Gun
The Spy Who Loved Me
Moonraker
Octopussy
The Living Daylights
Licence to Kill

2000:
You Only Live Twice
For Your Eyes Only
A View to a Kill
Goldeneye
The World is Not Enough
Die Another Day

Undecided:
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Tomorrow Never Dies

My opinion: all are good but have my doubts about View to a Kill, Goldeneye's cropping, TND's pinkish image, contrast in Live and let die and edge enhancement in Spy Who Loved Me

Worth getting the UE of Goldfinger then Mark (R1?) :) It would save space.. :)
Those caps are useful but so small its hard to tell where the 2000 part ends and the 2006 starts on some of them. The difference in the transfer of Goldeneye is negligeble (sp?)
I would like to have the original theatrical captions on both TND and Goldeneye though.

Grim, you have to click on the caps to compare them.

It looks like the 007 collections are box set only (no late news of individual releases) so I'll have to think about what I want/can afford.

Might buy one set and try to trade the excess for others?

I do want Goldfinger btw. 8)

D'oh! I see

In the first 2006 cap TND looks better than the SE, the others almost look worse.
Goldeneye is definitely cropped on the UE.
Goldfinger looks sharper on the 2006 UE, but in some shots its like they put a filter over it to make it look darker :?

We might have to buy a box each and swap the remainder titles until we each get what we want? 8)

Tomorrow Never Dies: Definitely 2000, look at all the yucky red. Which is evident in the Bullets and DVD Times captures. That's 3 different people doing them and all the old looks best.

Classic :D

Maybe next time send Grim a PM just to make sure  . Joe even added you need to click on each image

I can't believe you noticed FOF's Pink but not this.

In the first cap of the TND comparison, the 2006 UE looks better. In the others, the difference is smaller and the TND UE caps almost look worse than the SE ones.

Funny characters? Don't mock my alphabet you Santa you... ;)

Anyways. I'm not entirely sold on this. Sure colour seems nicer on many of the releases, and it seems like there's more picture information. But then again, the aspect ratio seems different?! Either stretched or squashed - and it varies from shot to shot on each film... though this may be the websites fault...

Here's my take, though I doubt I'll be upgrading this time... I'll hold for the HD/BRD versions sometime in 2007/2008.

Die Another Day 2006 looks less sharp and dullish
The world is not enough 2006 looks less sharp and colours oversaturated (look at the explosion in shot 2)
Tomorrow Never Dies 2006 looks a bit pink but I'm not sure it's all wrong, look at the parachuter for instance where the sky looks more "natural"?
GoldenEye 2006's cropping is horrible! And it's oversaturated...
Licence to kill? I prefer the diver in the 2000 version...
Living Daylights 2006 looks ok.
A View to a Kill 2006, cropped but sharper? Colours seems wrong, too warm.
Octopussy 2006, vertically stretched but sharper
For Your Eyes Only 2006, again stretched
Moonraker 2006 , oversaturated and less detailed
The Spy Who Loved me 2006, more saturated a bit too much contrast
The Man With The Golden Gun 2006, a bit pinkish and bright
To Live And Let Die 2006, perhaps to saturated and blurry
Diamonds are Forever 2006, a bit blurry? some weird stretching
On Her Majestys Secret Service 2006, that's a WHITE shirt not a blue one...
You Only Live Twice 2006, actually desaturated and sharper?
Operation Thunderball 2006, hard to make up my mind about colour, definetly lots more picture information
GoldFinger 2006 , some stretching, new colour cast... Not sure I like it.
From Russia With Love 2006, better
Dr No 2006, a bit too warm, loosing some of the blue. Otherwise better.

The Danish site says;
Dr No; no grain, and more colours
From Russia with Love; sharper image, nice dynamics
Goldfinger; a revelation, more image info and a sharp picture
Thunderball; great restoration, more image info and vivid colours
You Only Live Twice; clearer colours, more image info, and no noise
On Her Majesty's Secret Service; great colours, certain scenes have been significantly colour graded to support "the original vision" of the scenes
Diamonds are Forever; not much has changed
Live and Let Die; better colours and details
The Man with the Golden Gun; less noise/grain with better colour dynamics - the gun looks really golden
The Spy Who Loved Me; clearer colours, artifact free, looks great
Moonraker; even more colours, colours and cropping of the new version is preferable
For Your Eyes Only; clearer image especially in dark sequences, but some scenes have been artifically and controversially changed to night time scenes (!!!!!)
Octopussy; background details stand out and colours seem more real
A View To A Kill; more colour saturation, at times too much, image is cropped, still preferable to the old version
The Living Daylights; more image info, red colours tend to be pinkish, sharper image
Licence to Kill; more cropping, but better image, colour dynamics, contrast and sharper - especially in darker sequences
GoldenEye; a disappointment, more cropping and less colours - only positive; it's not censored
Tomorrow Never Dies; colour boost and a bit sharper
The World is Not Enough; not much different, certain scenes have lighter colours and especially explosions have more colour
Die Another Day; almost identical

Note the changes made to For Your Eyes Only...! Did not notice that, have anyone seen more info on what was changed?

I'm also not quite pleased with the revisionist tinkering made popular by G. Lucas having such a striking effect on OHMSS - the wedding dress almost seems BabyBlue instead of white, and the beach shot of Lazenby seems "wrong... :-/

Where does it say Lucas had an effect on OHMSS?

No one said Lucas had an affect on OHMSS.

As for the colour grading in that opening sequence (and For Your Eyes Only for that matter) these scenes were shot day-for-night so it's just possible that they didn't come out as intended?

Someone needs to ask Peter Hunt and John Glen, sharpish.

Brad no he didn't - what he said was that there has been some colour tinkering or something for OHMSS, which changes the look of the film, which is a bit like how Lucas messes about with Star Wars, he didnt say Lucas himself tinkered with OHMSS :D

Day for Night = Shot during the day with a filter over the camera to make it look like night (I guess?)

I assume that the dark hue is what was probably originally intended. Not sure though.

It may have been intended - but it's not what was released on cinemas, on vhs and on previous DVDs.

This is Lucas-like revisionist tinkering. Do you want that?
