The Departed ("Infernal Affairs" Remake) + Picture

It will be interesting to see what the general public think of it, those who don't have a scooby do it's a remake.

I was thinking Scorsese hasn't made an excellent film since 1999's "Bringing out the Dead". Since then he's seemed more interested in what I call (for want of a better phrase) Hollywood gloss.

I've yet to see The Aviator but it and GONY look so departed from the Scorsese of old where grit and realism came before gloss and throwing lots of money at the screen. It's hard to think the same man made The Aviator as Taxi Driver, or Goodfellas for that matter.

This isn't helped by Robert Deniro being replaced by Leonardo DiCaprio. As much as I suspect Scorsese would wish he'll never be another Deniro. DiCaprio is a decent actor but he's not in the same league as Deniro was at DiCaprio's age.

But then Deniro gave up acting years ago, it's all about the money for him now.

Right. That was a response to someone who mentioned Casino previously. I'd say it's a thematic follow-up that's all.

I'll be seeing it this w/e. If there was anyone who could remake IA and make it decent it's Marty.

Even the Trailer is rated 12A

Yeah, post-2000 Marty would make a decent film, but pre-2000 Marty would've made a superb film.

Marty has lost lots of his creative juices it has to be said. Still I'm hoping for a decent film and if we get more even better. GONY (I've yet to see The Aviator, the story looks dull even if I hear it's good) would've been so much better with the stupid love story cut out.

How does it compare to the Marty greats?

The general consensus (according to feedback I have read) is that it's not quite as good as his very best (i.e. Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino). But still pretty good (maybe better) compared to some of his most recent films such as GONY and Aviator.

GONY and Aviator were both nominated for an oscar (director and/or movie), so this will probably win him one. That way the academy can also award Nicholson and Leo, plus I'm sure they quite like Sheen as well...
So alot of voting members will wish them a price, and this is their way to award them all that price in just one category: best movie.

seen it, tho i dont have infernal affairs to comapre it too, since i havent seen the original..its a pretty good film...i went in totally without even knowing it existed lol, let alone that i was 2 and a half hours, thanks to a friend...and i did get a little bored when it kept going on, and on, and on...it really could have done with being sped up a little... but it was good, Nicholson played great, like his usuall psycho style self (does he do any different?!) Matt Damon and Leonardo Di Caprio were good too. the ending is really quite cool

lots of action in it, just the length got on my nerves.

I'm not so sure Marty has made some very acclaimed films but to date only one best movie and director (I think both) for The Aviator.

Personally I don't see any more than best actor, best supporting actor.

That was always a given. People really do like to shoot themselves in the foot when expecting things that were never going to be.

Goodfellas and Casino dont even compare to The Departed, I find most Marty films overated on the whole, they ussually start out good, but spiral into a mess (Like Goodfellas).

I certainly felt that way about Casino. As soon as Stone's character entered the seen and turned DeNiro into a pussy, the movie went downhill.

But Goodfellas had me captivated from beginning till end, the first couple of times I saw it...

He's been nominated for Best Director five times:- For Raging Bull, Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York and The Aviator.

He has never won an Academy Award for either category.

I was specifically talking about the films he'd won but seeing as that's none it's a moot point. I could've sworn The Aviator had won best film or director but I guess not.

The answer is simple you're not a fan of Marty's style. No harm in that but it's not the films it's your personal taste.

Just like I dislike old school martial arts' style. They're not going to win me over seeing more and more of them, the style for me sucks.

The Departed I'm hearing is not typical Marty so you like it, it's more standard thriller/drama. Nothing wrong with that but very different from his usual directing style.

I'll be seeing it in the week.

Get The Fuck Out makes more sense to me, but there you go.

By the way, that .gif is hilarious.

As for The Departed, very well made film, but the length of the film was a negative point for me. Whereas Infernal Affairs raced to an end point in a cat-and-mouse kind of way (who's going to expose whom), the denouement of this film took things far more leisurely.
I liked that the Costello character was given extra levels of seediness though, and played in only the way that Nicholson can

Better than the original in some respects, but not quite as pacy an ending as it should've been.

Scorsese should've won the Oscar for Goodfellas, despite Lorraine Bracco annoying the hell out of me.
