Scorsese should've/could've won the Oscar for: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull & Goodfellas. All 9 out of 10 films.

Very Stephen Chowish. Or do you remember the screaming schoolgirls in "Battlefield Baseball"? They were awesome, too.

I don't recall seeing any of those clips from anything. I just like the snap zoom on the cat

The schoolgirls reacted to outrageous actions by screming and the camera zooms in to their faces very quickly.

I saw this tonight.

7 out of 10

Firstly no it's not a patch on Marty's classics such as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Casino or Goodfellas (not in order) which are incredibly layed with oodles of depth (it's not even close). Secondly it's not as good as Infernal Affairs and thirdly Shen is right it's too damn long.

Now that's out of the way Leo Decaprio and Mak Walhberg were excellent, Leo all beefed up looks a whole lot better than the skinny wimp we're used to.

Jack Nicholson was also very good but his performance he can do asleep with his hand tired behind his back.

I was pleasantly pleased to see while some scenes are lifted almost exactly from Infernal Affairs lots of other are new and even managed to shock me occasionally. Even if the biggest shocks weren't shocks for me.

Yes it's Marty light feeling more like a Michael Mann film (not a bad thing but not your usual Marty film either).

The biggest problem by far is the pace, it's too god damn slow. Infernal Affairs moved a long at a break neck pace with an edge of your seat cat and mouse tale. The Departed really takes it's time.

The tension of the Andy Lau/Matt Damon's part really wanting to be a good cop but equally he feels loyalty to his boss is not present, so all the angst Andy Lau feels is gone. In The Departed Matt Damon is simply bad.

Funnily enough in Infernal Affairs it's Andy Lau/Matt Damon's part which is the main focus but The Departed it's Leo Decaprio/Tony Leung's. Oh and of course Leo Decaprio will never be a Tony Leung, Leung like Pacino is simply in another league.

Oh I also thought Infernal Affairs where the bad guy wins was much better, even if the ending in The Departed is at least new.

I was pleased to see The Departed deserves it's 18 rating, too many films pander to the nancy pancy 15 rating for my liking of late.

All in all a good cop drama but not a classic like Infernal Affairs, of course helped greatly by feeling so fresh and original.

If you're not seen Infernal Affairs like most haven't you'll probably thoroughly enjoy it.

On a final note I have been disappointed in one way or another by all of the Hollywood output this year:

* Mission Impossible 3: Drivel, repetitive, dumb action, rubbish
* X-Men 3: Good fun but hollow as an easter egg
* Superman Returns: For me one of the strongest this year but boy the plot was ropey, saved to an extent by gorgeous cinematography & CGI.
* Miami Vice: I'm sure there's a great film locked away in hear if they'd stop mumbling and turn the bloody volume up
* Children of Men: This is supposed to be great? Well I missed it. For a film with such a fantastic script boy it was mostly dull. Oh and where was the tension?
* Volver: Excellent, original, fresh, funny, sexy, erotic. Oh wait it's not a Hollywood film. Go figure!

Still it says something when I'll get the DVD for 5 out of the 7 films mentioned here (i.e - MI3 and Children of Men sucked, especially MI3).

I have high hopes for Casino Royale.

Is it better than Gangs of New York?
Leung like Pacino is simply in another league.
Pacino is not so great in recent years (late 90's-now), all he tends to do is shout a lot now. His best work of recent years is probably Angels in America, which is worth seeing once, that's if you don't mind pro-homosexual propaganda movies.

Oh hell yes, it's a proper cop drama. GONY would've been loads better with the entire romance exorcised.

To be fair it's the script not his talent that is weak IMO. The scripts aren't there half as often as they used to be 10-15+ years ago.
Angels in America
I hear he and it are fantastic.
pro-homosexual propaganda movies
You have a real issue with homosexuality don't you? Big deal if it's pro-homosexual.

I need to check out The Aviator. Considering I've not seen that the last classic Marty film IMO was Casino in 1995 and the last excellent Marty film was Bringing out the Dead in 1999, very underrated.

I wonder if Decaprio will make as many films with Marty as Deniro did? I think it's 8 between 1973 with Mean Streets and 1995 with Casino.

He's made 3 and is set to play Theodore Roosevelt with Marty next.

Although this wasn't not directed at me I feel I have to say my thoughts about that topic. The fact that it has no problems with homosexuality is really no big deal at all. But I've always disliked homos who are reproaching you with their sexual interest, being all proud about it and so on. Mind you, but do straights usually do that? Look at me, I'm hetero! If homosexuality was that normal, then I see no need in constantly bragging about it. A colleague of mine at work is gay and I never knew until my other work mates told me. I wasn't shocked or so, just a little unusual, because all the other gay folks I got to know to bragged about their sexual orientation since day 1 of knowing them.

Yes Islam is entirely tolerant of different races, you don't discriminate over which Westerners you blow up.

Huh? What has that to do with anything written here about "The Departed" and the homosexuality issue?

Besides, let's not start offending each other (on this board again unfortunately) please. The "Muslims-are-all-terrorists" jokes are old and really start getting on my nerves, even when I know they weren't meant.

Eva: For the record stop offending other peoples races. Yes by all means start a debate with reasoning to back it up but LD is clearly (and frankly he has a point) fed up with it. So give it a rest.

LD does not insult your family, friends or beliefs so don't insult his. Sure a joke is one thing but enough is enough. I see no difference than LD saying your mother is a whore and you insulting Islam.

You've already been politely warned for starting unnecessary flame wars, turning threads into a string of insults. Give it a rest!
thelostdragon wrote:But I've always disliked homos who are reproaching you with their sexual interest, being all proud about it and so on.
Fair point except you're taking the minority and making out it's the majority.
thelostdragon wrote:Mind you, but do straights usually do that?
Are you serious? Have you not seen women on a Friday night tits and butts hanging out? Legs everywhere. Guys with a bigger ego than The Empire State Building, Guys telling everyone how many conquests they've had.

Seriously you must be blind if you can't spot straight people doing it to.
thelostdragon wrote:If homosexuality was that normal, then I see no need in constantly bragging about it.
That depends how you define normal. The human race is far, far to diverse for normal to even exist. To a homosexual it's perfectly normal, to a man who wishes he was a woman it's perfectly normal to grow breasts, to a paodephile what he's doing is (probably) normal.

Of course that's not to say paodephilia is right by my or society's standards but as for being ab-normal it doesn't exist.
thelostdragon wrote:A colleague of mine at work is gay and I never knew until my other work mates told me.
How can you one minute say homosexuals insist on making everyone know they're gay then admit yourself some gay people do not.

Maybe I should have said: I dislike THOSE homos who are reproaching you with their sexual interest, being all proud about it and so on.

As it is actually what I meant as you saw from the statement I made about my colleague.

Your butchery of the English language is insulting. It's PAEDOPHILIA and PAEDOPHILE.
