Pink Floyd: Dark Side of Moon - Is it as good as they say?

Post by bradavon »

And who do Pink Floyd best compare to?

The Hybrid SACD is only £9.99 on CD WOW before vouchers and at that price I'm tempted to give them ago.

The fact it's SACD 5.1 is a bonus too. Cheers

Yes, it's a superb album. You probably won't like it though, considering your extremely short-attention span, given that you like every piece of pop garbage released under the sun that's designed for middle-aged wymyn. Your ADHD addled-mind probably couldn't cope with this prog rock epic.

Eva, I'm sorry but some of the things you said there are out of order, IMO. I don't care if it was an attempt at humour, alluding Brad has ADHD or something like it is totally unacceptable.
I'd apologise if I were you.

Only if Brad himself asks for one.

Actually I bought it and think it's great, nothing at all like I was expecting. It's the album Lynch would've made if he made music.

As for having an short attention span? I only the other day was waxing lyrical over Lawrence of Arabia so you know full well that's bollocks. Name me one pop star I've praised? (except for Michael Jackson).

What's a WYMYN?

I like you Eva but why do you feel the need to insult everyone? Even people you otherwise seem to like.

p.s - Thanks Grim appreciated.

Off the top of my head:- Shania Twain, The Corrs, Shakira, James Blunt, Sandie Thom, Katie Melua.

I like you Eva but why do you feel the need to insult everyone? Even people you otherwise seem to like.

Katie Melua doesn't sing pop  and there's no way James Blunt is pop, the rest I wouldn't say are out and out pop artists either but I'll give you them if you wish.

Sandie Thom is Folk-Pop, Shania Twain Country-Pop, The Corrs Pop or Folk-Pop depending which album. Okay Shakira is.

Just because it's easy listening it certainly doesn't immediately make it pop.

Hate to burst your bubble there brad, but Katie Melua is definitely pop, as is Blunt. The distinction is whether or not you would consider them to be MOR, which Blunt is. I've not heard enough of Melua (though I have seen her and wish to see more ;)) to comment on her, though by all accounts she does seem to be very generic in her musical style.

Nah, it's all pop. You can't hide behind sub-genres.

LOL no way Melua is pop it's more Jazz and Blues but mainly Jazz. Have you guys listened to any of her music? And especially the album stuff.

Sure I can see why you'd think her singles are Pop but listen more carefully they're not. Generic far from it, oh and Blunt is definitely not Pop, he has guitars, drums and a proper band. That's not pop.

Sugababes are Hip-Hop mixed with Pop for example. Pussycats Dolls are virtually all pop, with a bit of Hip-Hop but yes pretty much Pop.

How you can think Melua and Blunt are Pop when PCDs are also Pop is beyond me, nope you're mistaken. No bubbles need bursting Bruce is right now't wrong with pop, it's just "most" of these aren't.

Since when was Country or Folk a sub-genre or Pop? Oh and yes Melua is well tasty, very sexy indeed.

Me too. People think easy listening much mean poor music. Jame Blunt's so called pop lyrics for examples are very well written.

p.s - MOR? I'm so out with all this Net Lingo.

Shakira is a wonderful musical performer. Only because she lands a hit every once in a while in the charts doesn't make her music less good.

Someone who has only listened to her popular songs "Whenever, Wherever" or "Hips Don't Lie" and never listened to her other songs on her albums shouldn't even comment. How can one judge on something without knowing it? (Besides Bollywood-movies. :D j/k )

Pop is short for popular. Ergo, all the above mentioned artists (yer Melua's and yer Blunt's) are pop; they may have a particular style, but are definitely pop.
Now, you can have good, interesting pop (Michael Jackson at the height of his powers, for instance), or you can have terrible pop (crap like the Cheeky Girls). But it's still pop, as the singles chart in the top 40, so somebody's buying them.

MOR, if I remember rightly, stands for Middle Of the Road (I could be horribly wrong though about that ) which is what you can argue over and be elitist about. Your own feelings towards a particular artist will determine this :D
Some feel that Melua is MOR, others will think that she's a songstress from the heavens.

Blunt though, in my opinion, is a sappy sod. He's hardly plumbing the depths of human existence with the lyrics in his songs, nor is the instrumentation or melody in his music and his plaintive voice of an amazing quality.
His newer stuff might be different, but after hearing the likes of You're Beautiful and the one with that lass from The O.C. in the video, I can't say I'm too bothered if I don't hear more of his stuff.

But hey, whatever floats your boat ;)

I think You're Beautiful is a beautiful ballad. One of the best in 10 years.

Agreed, it's a great love song. Nothing wrong with love songs or is it not cool or manly to admit such a thing? Bollocks to that.
Kurgan wrote:Pop is short for popular. Ergo, all the above mentioned artists (yer Melua's and yer Blunt's) are pop; they may have a particular style, but are definitely pop.
LOL of course it's technically short for Pop but you know it's not meant that way.

Limp Bizkit are popular does it make them Pop music? Jay-Z is popular is he Pop music? Both of which have been in the Top 40, the Top 40 covers a huge genre of music not all of it Pop, although agreed a big raft of it is.

The rest maybe but Melua and Blunt aren't pop it's as simple as that. Listen to Melua and you will see it's definitely Jazz. As I presume you're basing your opinion on her more catchy stuff then you aren't really qualified to comment (more than saying you dislike her). Yes agreed her commercial stuff is more poppy if you put me in a corner but most of her album stuff is very much jazz.
Kurgan wrote:Some feel that Melua is MOR, others will think that she's a songstress from the heavens.
I don't think she's either but credit where credits due she writes her own material and flatly refuses to sing "so called" live from a recording.

Personally I just think some just dislike his unusual male voice, it's not your normal gruff tone.

Blunt has an awful voice, it sounds like cats being wrung out mixed with a pubescent boy's voice cracking and "You're Beautiful" is manipulative tripe. "Three Wisemen" other hand is just complete bollocks with totally nonsensical lyrics that wouldn't feel out of place on a fucking Mars Volta album.

This version of "You're Beautiful" is the only one with any genuine artistic merit.

Blunt is definitely pop music. The singer-songwriter thing is en vogue with the mainstream at the moment (you can't count the number of those fuckers who are popular at the moment on one hand). He wouldn't have been signed by Atlantic Records if they didn't think that he could be marketed to young-adult-to-middle-aged women and sweater-wearing ninnies.

One can too justifiably judge and write off an artist solely by hearing a couple singles, rather than listening to the whole album; it's no different to how you can just completely write off a TV series just by seeing a couple episodes, rather than watching an entire season. If they can't convince me with the singles, then why should I be bothered listening to the album?

Since when do lyrics need to make sense? Talk about bland if they all did.

Fair point.
