Heroes Among Heroes = WV DVD vs FE DVD

Post by chenlung »

OK folks:

Force Entertainment (English): This time, we get a 4:3 suspected NTSC>PAL transfer with ghosting. Not much difference in quality with the Chinese version. No subtitles, English dub which seems to be the same length as the Hong Kong counterpart.

World Video: Another crummy but fairly decent image. The big plus is the inclusion of a Cantonese soundtrack. The film does start abruptly however. Nothing great.

Force Entertainment (Chinese): An anamorphic 1:68:1 (roughly) transfer is interesting but the single-layer/side disc crams on this (and the English) version making for a low bit-rate and as a result, a shitty-looking image. Similar to World Video (only anamorphic). It's no better than a VCD at times. Not only that, but Force have fucked up the language by only including a Mandarin soundtrack (with burnt-in English/Chinese subtitles). Again, nothing great.

One thing I did notice was that the subtitles of both DVDs come on at different times! I didn't think that was possible as perhaps only one print with the English/Chinese subtitles existed.

I wonder how Columbia Tristar's DVD looks (aside from reports of being a little dirty mainly at the start - which I don't mind as long as detail/colour/brightness/contrast are reasonable). It would be possibly I suppose to create a version combining all elements of these DVDs.

I wouldn't really bother with this one too much as like 'Snake and Crane', the fights are good but the whole thing is a stinker (especially when Ng Man Tat is involved). Would be better if the scissors got loose for this.

Force Entertainment = R0 Australia.
World Video = R0 America.

Indeed every transfer is shite. But Force Entertainment seems to be the best looking.

OK, forgot to downsize Force (English) images and I've grabbed another section of the film for comparison 4.
