I wonder how they had gone OOP. Perhaps their rights expired?

This was confirmed by Deepdiscountdvd staff. Earlier in the year Sony R1 (around March/April) randomly made about 200 of their catalogue titles OOP. These included a lot of foreign films like SITES, Ken Kumai's The Sea is Watching, Zhang Yimou's Happy Times, Beijing Bicycle, Zu Zhou's Train.
Perhaps their rights expired?
They still have 'em AFAIK.

Bit stupid, how the hell are people supposed to own the film?

No wonder people bootleg (not that I'd want to encourage it for a greedy bastard's selfishness) or import. If you ever get into bother by doing a fan-project, just say that.
