Dust Devil: The Final Cut - R1 Subversive Cinema
This remastered transfer is the epitome of absolute win.

It doesn't look like they've used any DNR processes, since it retains the natural film grain; it looks like an actual film. While watching the film I only noticed one tiny black speck, Norman Hill and his team deserve every commendation they receive for this pristine restoration.

hey,

only had time to watch the first disc from this 5 disc set but aside from the film being quite good and challenging, the disc is very satisfactory (love the score, really pounding through the speakers). Fine commentary where Hill keeps Stanley moving and the subsequent video extras are spot on in the informative-department. Reading Stanley's production diary is a painful experience though as he clearly had it rough on the in- and outside.

Shame about the lack of a subtitle track though as I had some trouble at times getting through accents.

I watched all the dvds and all the extras! superb! the commentaries and interviews are BETTER than the film ever was or ever will be.

The extras are far better than the film and far more interesting, truley special extra documentaries which are expanded so much more in the interviews and commentaries.

Watch and listen now and learn how insane Stanley is! but honest and very clever and well informed.

hey,

there was an intent anyway to connect Dust Devil and Hardware, yea? Other than some similar imagery at the end of DD compared to the beginning of Hardware, I never saw any. Unless there is a similiar theme explored in Stanley's debut that I've since forgotten...

And by no means is DD perfect as it reeks of a clear, very valid vision not quite being fulfilled due to Stanley being as special as he is and lack of funding. But it's certainly different via its setting and not like most of what's out there.

Hardware I still dont think I have seen sadly, as he refers a lot to it in the extras and I have to imagine what he is talking about

He seems to think they are set in the same world and continue on from each other in some way anyway. I will have to take his word on that.

The film, well in the end Dust Devil isnt the film he set out to make in any way, not even close and its amazing the film even got made really with the troubles he has had on this and all his other projects. He has to be the most unlucky man on the earth! if you ever meet him run away as fast as you can, as hell everyone around hims gets injured or dies! his stories are apauling, the mans a death magnet. From the sound of it he is one a few hit lists.

watched The Secret Glory feature documentary and you're right, romero, the extras do entertain and inform more than the main program. Doc. is messy, overstylized but certainly interesting but Stanley's commentary and interview are completely engrossing.

The Secret glory is an intresting documentary for sure and good to see you watche dthem extras as most people wont bother, but it is a bit long winded and slightly goes off track.

But that doesnt seem to be the makers falut as Stanley really has some amzing stories that I would have love to have seen included in the documentary.

Loved the many tales of freaky things like when him and his girlfriend were trapped in that castle alone when the plasma storm happened! all around them, scary stuff. Love the links between Coka Cola and the Nazi war machine too

He is such an informed guy, he seems to know everything about everything and knows how to tell a tale. Fingers crossed he gets to do more stuff for a dvd soon, as I could listen to the mans tales all day

he is indeed a sharp guy and seems to get into those kind of situations that make for great/horrific anecdotes. And of course, Secret Glory he acknowledges as being far from complete so a few years down the road, some more coherence and closure might be reached.

And I think one review described him well: "dances to a different drum beat than most of us". I think that should be taken as a compliment.

Voice In The Moon is obviously a tough one to grasp fully and Stanley of course admits that comprehension for a Western audience, based on what he had, never was an option. But as always, the real meat comes from the supplements, best showcased in Stanley's interview where he goes in-depth on the dangers he and his crew was actually in, including the almost crippling of his camera man and the disappearance of their military advisor. The latter later turned up dead in 1998, mysterious circumstances surround that.

I love the way he is so descriptive about his old stories, I could picture him and the cameraman in the midst of the bombs blowing up.

hey,

yea and surely the way he describes the rocket hitting him and his cameraman is one such moment. Frozen in time, hovering overground, all's white. And to some he may later sound like a conspiracy theorist but he's a more balanced, calm guy in that regard. Not spouting paranoid ramblings at 100 miles per hour.

Believe that same cameraman shot White Darkness for him too and didn't get hurt this time.
