The classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz will return to British cinemas next month in digitally restored form.

The film prints have been cleaned up by experts at Warner Bros using the latest technology, removing dirt and scratches from the film. A member of the British Film Institute who has seen the film told BBC News that the film has "amazing image clarity and breathtaking colour".

The Wizard of Oz, based on L Frank Baum's book, won three Academy Awards when originally released, propelling Judy Garland to global stardom in the role of Dorothy. The restored version will hit the big screen on December 15.
