Any Dutchies here?

Post by Lourdes »

If there are then I would appreciate your help. I'd like to find out if the Dutch boxset of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex ( http://www.a-film.nl/dvd.php?id=00006490 ) has any glitches or a fucked up NTSC>PAL last volume like the R4 and R2UK release. I've been Googling and looking through Dutch forums but I cannot come up with anything at all. Probably because my Dutch sucks, what with me not knowing it and all.

So if we do have any clog wearing tulip lovers that live in windmills then I'd be most obliged if you could have a look also.

I've asked this question for ya, on a Dutch forum. So hopefully we'll find out.

But I believe the Dutch release doesnt have english subs. Wouldnt that be a problem? Dont tell me you're gonna watch it in English...

Thanks. :)

I use a HTPC so I could watch them with a script.

Did you built your own HTPC, if so what setup and operating system you using. Are you using MythTV?

You'd go to the effort of getting a script and all that messing around just because the others are NTSC-PAL???

With HTPC you don't have to go through the dvd authoring process. Which makes it pretty damn simple.

EDIT: unless you run into problems with the script. But with GitS it's pretty unlikely.

Fair enough and assuming you can source a script.

I use plain old XP. I'm too much of a power user for specific OS's and frontends. It's an AMD X2 4600 (recently upgrades so I can play freeview HD stuff), 2GB RAM nad a 6800GT (will be replaced when there is REAL hrdware assisted decoding). I play everything with Media Player Classic. PureVideo as my MPEG2 decoder and ffdshow for everything else as well as scaling and use of various filters to improve the experience.

Have we not met before? I always buy the best releases I can, I rarely compromise. And I will never compromise with shitty releases. R1 is interlaced, R2UK is glitched and partly NTSC>PAL, R4 is partly NTSC>PAL and has no DTS.

And even if I had to author DVD's it's no hassle. Couple of minutes actual work per disc.

Excellent, that all i wanted to now, I too use ffdshow (Very cool for all types of media, including ogm files). I might to the same, i want to watch ogm on my tv rather than PC, so prob will build my own HTPC

If all you want is easy watching of downloaded files then get an xbox, mod it and use xbox media centre.

Is Freeview HD still broadcasting or is it just stuff from the BBC? I presume you live in London?

Only BBC HD. I can plainly see the Crstal Palace tower from where I am so my reception is perfect with a 15 year old tiny little set top aerial.

Hmmm, why would you think the R2 Dutch release will be any different? Everyone gets sent the same NTSC masters, so the chances are slim with these i'm afraid. :(

If you don't compromise, what about the r2j DVDs? They not better than the R1s? Better yet, ain't the series out on R3k yet?

I still ain't got round to watching this series yet, hence my ignorance on the various DVD releases. (Plus I got the UK boxset given me for free) :D

How much did the Freeview HD card cost you? I didn't even know you could get those. Oh I guess you've downloaded some Freeview HD software? Or does it just pick it up as you're close enough?

Cheers btw.

IG were actually involved with the production of the continental releases and quality checked them. Didn't happen with the UK releases. I don't know what happened with the R4 but afaik they just received PAL masters. Don't know why the last master was fucked up but Mangle UK used the same.
The R2J's lack DTS and I know that the early R4's had better PQ. So the Dutch box is potentially the ideal release bar the lack of subs.

I have a Nebula card. It was only £50 because they were clearing stock of their older full-height ones. One I got was faulty so they replaced it with a £90 half-height card. :) Nebula are popular because they have their own software which is pretty damn good and the support is excellent. If I was using MCE or whatever I'd have just gotten come cheaper cards becasue I wouldn't be usng the software.
For HD stuff you need to pay a small fee because MPEG4 AVC decoders have licensing costs. Or you can just record it and play it back with one of the free but technicaly not legal x264 codecs outside of their software.

Madman claimed that they were HD masters.
fucked up NTSC>PAL last volume like the R4
If it's NTSC>PAL, then why does it exhibit PAL speed-up?
