It's getting very good reviews from almost all quarters. I saw the trailers some time ago, and it looked, well, odd, to put it bluntly. :D

Surely it can't top masterpieces like Hellboy and Blade 2? Looks more in line with his dreck The Devil's Backbone. ;)

Blade 2 was a masterpiece but wasn't fond of Hellboy Director's Cut (not seen the theatrical). This is more akin to his best work, The Devil's Backbone, yes. No need to be so jealous Grim & Kurgan, I'm sure one day you'll be lucky enough to see this.

I was being sarcastic obviously. Hellboy and Blade 2 were average at best and the plots for both films were rubbish.

The Donnie Yen fight chereography really helped Blade 2, if there's anything that's perfectly suited to his under-cranking style it's vampires that move at superhuman speed.

I think this is gonna be my favourite film of 2006. Quite surprising considering I’m not a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro and I generally dislike the fantasy genre. But Pan’s Labyrinth isn’t exactly your typical fantasy fare. Most of the film’s running time is used to display the horrors of the Spanish civil war. Obviously a touchy subject to del Toro as his vision seems very dark and uncompromising. There’s a good amount brutal violence to be seen, and a lot worse stuff going on off-screen. The director doesn’t have much mercy to any of his characters. The movie being shot from a point of view of a little child doesn’t make it any easier. But all this darkness makes the amazing and often stunningly beautiful fantasy sequences even more effective. Thanks to the excellent script, great acting and absolutely stunning special effects / make up work the film is able to move fluently back and forth between the two worlds. The most rewarding movie experience I’ve had this year.

Pan’s Labyrinth

10 out of 10

Spanish title: El Laberinto del Fauno (translated to: The Labyrinth of the Fauna)

Pan’s Labyrinth is OUTSTANDING. It's not often I get to say this but the film is FLAWLESS, everything is perfect.

The imagery is out of this world. Guillermo del Toro is a genius, sorry I'm gushing but Pan’s Labyrinth is that sort of film.

The film perfectly blends the real life brutality of the Spanish civil war with some truly breathtaking fantasy imagery. The image posted above is well you have to see it to believe it.

Ivana Baquero who plays the little girl is tremendous, actually everyone is perfect. It's very scary in places, shocking, sad, happy and violent too. All rolled into one masterpiece of a film. Pan’s Labyrinth is the sort of film when the credits roll you sit there in awe at what you've just been privileged to sit through.

It is the sort of film that makes going to see all the drivel that is thrown at us worth while. I am proven yet again correct that Spanish language cinema (namely Spain and Mexico) is easily the most exciting area right now for film, far more exciting to me than Korean cinema.

I can confidently say everyone on this forum will love it or at the very least like it.

p.s - Blade 2 is great but a masterpiece? I seriously reckon sometimes (Brad is about to sound big headed) some people don't have a clue what this actually means. It's up there with Romero saying Starship Troopers is a masterpiece.

Woah! I'm gonna have to stop ribbing you about your tight-arsedness in honor of this bold gesture on your part Brad. :D 8)

Did ZetaMinor mention whether the Del Toro boxset might actually feature new release of Backbone?

It does look nice and has DTS but the extras won't have English subs and it's missing the commentary.

This film I'd actually like to hear the commentary.

You will :D

I've just pre-ordered Volver 2 Disc SE too for £10.99 but yes as soon as I know which version is best to get I'll be all over this.

As you know I don't like doing it as a rule of thumb but when films as excellent as Volver and Pan's Labyrinth are released I have to get them asap. I'd have pre-ordered Miami Vice: DC at over £10 if the TC was a lot better ;)

I also bought two HD-DVD Combos before Xmas at £16 a pop too :D

I'm sure I read in the DVD Forums Bargain forum it is a new DVD. Chronos won't be though seeing as it only came out last year and that's NTSC-PAL I believe.

There is a DVD Times review which mentions this, which obviously you'll need to find yourself.

FYI the UK R2 is only £10.89 here: http://www.sendit.com/video/item/7001000130452

I'm sure Sendit charge on shipping not order. BlahDVD also list this as a 2 disc release.

R2 is out two months ahead, but R1 has a DTS track and a Charlie Rose Show interview. This will probably be put on Warner's TotalHD format one of these days.

R1 Specs:-
New Line Home Entertainment will release Pan's Labyrinth on May 15th. The mind-bogglingly beautiful film arrives with an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 EX, 2.0 Surround and DTS-ES 6.1 tracks as well as English subtitles. The two-disc Platinum Series set will include an audio commentary with director Guillermo Del Toro, a making-of documentary, "The Power Of Myth," "El Fauno y Las Hadas," "The Color and The Shape," "Pre-Release Making-of," "Director's Notebook" featurettes, Del Toro's "The Charlie Rose Show" appearance, storyboards, galleries and more. Retail is $28.98.

Nice on thanks Eva. The Play LE content is nice but I'd prefer DTS so I'm waiting. The R1 not only has DTS plus the Interview it also has extra:

* A Making Of Documentary
* "Pre-Release Making Of

New Line will give us an excellent transfer too.

You can see the LE cover art and post cards here: http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/3257088/ ... oduct.html

I've cancelled my Play pre-order. That's two orders for this film I've now cancelled :D

Wonderful film. Totally glad that Hollywood had no involvement in the project.
Felt like a bit like Total Recall - Was it all real or a coping mechanism to escape the horrible reality?

That's where audiences' opinions split. I think it was the latter and I say everyone who believes otherwise is like Ofelia who want to escape the sad and horrific truth.

Del Toro has said that aas far as he's concerned, it's all real. Doesn't really matter which you believe though imo.

I don't think it matters, the film is so outstanding I don't care.

You reckon? TR isn't on the same universe as PL.

The R1 is out Tuesday, yipeey! I've had it on pre-order for a while. Pity there is no HD on the horizon but then I've wait since March (when the UK version was released) so don't want to wait any longer.

I'm not talking in terms of film quality. Can you not remember TR? The ambiguous nature left it up to the viewer:- Was John's secret agent adventure on Mars real or were they a Rekall VR simulation?

TR was such a wasted opportunity. I can just imagine how awesome the Cronenberg version would've been. Verhoeven made an entertaining action picture, but still a wasted opportunity.

Phew I thought for a second I thought you were. I just about remember it. It's not a particularly rememberable film for me.

I didn't realise Cronenberg was going to make it, agreed he'd have made a so much better film.
