The same few films (Departed, Babel, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen) seem to appear in multiple categories.
Leo was very good in Departed IMO.

It's a shame Daniel Craig wasnt nominated. In my opinion he certainly deserves at least a nomination.

I havent seen many of the movies this year, btw... so cant really make any predictions. I can guess some of the winners, but still...

If you mean for Casino Royale, then indeed that would have been something, he was an excellent Bond but maybe that would have been seen as too populist by the Academy? :?

A vast improvement over the BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations and thank god Apocalypto & Iwo Jima were not nominated for Best Foriegn Language Film.

Brad will be glad to see that Pan's Labyrinth is nominated.

Surprised Casino Royale didn't get an adapted screenplay nomination but Borat did? Was there a screenplay??

The Oscars are pants anyways. Same old usual suspects and backslappers.

Most of the time the winners turn out to be rubbish.

And they're really gonna have to stop teasing Scorcese...

Great to see Pan's Labyrinth. It should've been nominated for Best Director too.

I've not seen the other films but I seriously doubt any of them come close to Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scotland. Which is actually stupid as his is the supporting role, it's not the lead.

Again I've not seen the others but Penélope Cruz easily deserves to win for Volver. Best Director I'd give to Paul Greengrass.

The Departed is a decent thriller but doesn't deserve to be nominated at all. It's far from Martin Scorsese's best work and especially when the original (which is better) got no nominations when it was released period.

If Marty took a shit on film it would get nominated.

He's past his best so is unlikely to win anything.

No Oscar noms but loads of HK film nominations surely (IIRC). I mean by the same token do you expect to see the remake nominated for best English language film at the HK Film Awards? :D

I agree with you about Casino Royale, Craig was great in it but its unlikely to get nominated because the Academy don't usually go for blockbusters.

To be eligible for an Oscar nom a film has to have played in a Los Angeles theatre for a minimum of 7 days I think. The obvious exception to this is the Best Foreign Language Film category; so if Infernal Affairs wasn't given a theatrical run when it came out in America, it could only be eligible for the Best Foreign Language Film award.

HK submitted the film for Best Foreign Language Film at the 75th Oscars, but it never made the nominations shortlist. Twilight Samurai did, but the eventual winner was The Barbarian Invasions.

I thought Casino Royale might just have been classy enough to dent the awards season -- and it did with Bafta but not Oscar. I doubt any of the best picture nominees are anything like as entertaining or well-made. I say doubt because I haven't seen any of them yet. The Queen doesn't appeal at all and the others I may seek out on DVD when the time comes.

It was a British thing. I doubt it will again.

Me neither. Casino Royale is a better film to The Departed. CR is a wee bit long, The Departed is bloated.

Interesting to see Water being nominated for "Best Foreign Language Film".... considering it's a Canadian entry and has Hindi as it's primary language. The Academy must've changed their rules (they didn't allow UK's entry of The Warrior a few years back, as they said that Hindi is not a main language of the UK).

I'll need to buy this movie btw. I've heard nothing but great reviews for this film. Canadian R1 seems to be the way forward.

Les Invasions Barbares was a very good drama, but I really liked Twilight Samurai much more. :) Refresh my memory here. Wasn't that the same year it went up against City of God? If it was, I'd have to say that City of God was my favorite of those three.

Also, regarding Water . . .
Really wonderful film. It was a long time in the making, but worth the wait. Funny that you mention those rules about the language and country, because when I saw Water listed as a Canadian film, I checked to make sure it was the same film I'd seen by Deepa Mehta. :P I thought it was an Indian film, but filmed in Sri Lanka. Where does Canada fit in? :D

And one more note about the Oscar nominations.

BIG support for Pan's Labyrinth and Little Miss Sunshine. I can't really give an opinion on other films, other than Water, since I haven't seen them. Before being nominated for an Oscar, Little Miss Sunshine looked like it was headed for cult classic status, in keeping with Harold and Maude type of films. But with the mainstream nominations, even giving the little girl a nomination for best supporting actress, I'm not sure this will keep that kooky, special status now. Personally, I would have nominated Steve Carell for best supporting actor over Alan Arkin or the little girl.

I said the 75th Acadamy Awards but it was actually the 76th! City of God was nominated for some of the main awards (Cinematography, Directing, Editting, Screenplay) and was left out of the Foriegn Language Film catergory.

Bollocks to the oscars, let them slap each other on the backs.

Its not about quality, its about CASH and Who your friends are. NO film can even get recognition if they dont have hundreds of thousands to pimp the film.
