Hurt

Post by Kurgan »

I'd personally heard Cash's version first a little while ago, and re-discovered it last year. By no stretch of the imagination was I a Johnny Cash fan, and the only music of his that I'd really heard was Ring Of Fire, but his cover of Hurt just hit me. It was only a few weeks ago that I'd heard the original version done by Trent Reznor and thought it was good, but it didn't have the same impact on me; perhaps due to Cash's version just having so much raw power in his voice and the pared down guitar being the only instrument played, or maybe because Reznor insists on putting noise in front of his vocals, I don't know, but it certainly affected me.
I guess I'm just idly wondering (at 5.23 in the morning ) if anyone has any opinions on the original NIN version compared to Johnny Cash's.

I haven't heard NIN's version, but I really like Cash's version. Powerful and emotional.

hey,

I can appreciate what both Trent and Cash did for it, although I have a weaker spot for any version Trent does where it's just him and the piano. No programming to go along with it.

And no, I'm not particularly irritated by the lyrics change at one point. ;)

ps anyone that gets a chance to see NIN on their current tour, please do, its a much better live performance than when i saw them at the release of with teeth.

Reznor has sung Cash's version before: saw a video on YouTube or some such where, like you said, it was him and a piano playing. I think it was for a Hurricane Katrina benefit concert, so maybe 'shit' wouldn't be as appropriate as 'thorns'. I did like that version, it must be said, but I play acoustic guitar (badly) so my loyalties lie with Cash on that one

Yeah, I saw it on one of the music channels ages ago. Very poignant video.
