David Lynch's Inland Empire (2007)

Post by EvaUnit02 »

Very recently Lynch finished his latest film Inland Empire, it's distributed by Studio Canal outside North America. Lynch filmed the movie entirely in HD, he loves the medium now.

Lynch is distributing the film in the US. So basically this means that the R1 DVD will be priced at USD $39.99 RRP (unless it becomes available cheaply via Subversive Cinema). At least every other region DVD will eventually become affordable.

"Seeking to explore new methods of distribution, David Lynch has secured the rights for the US and Canada to his first digital video feature, Inland Empire.

Reaching an agreement with Studio Canal, Lynch proclaims, "It's a whole new world out there, even when it comes to distribution." The film's producer Mary Sweeney concurs stating, "David's decision to explore a new model of distribution is consistent with the fearless way in which he made 'Inland Empire.'""

You can view the first two animated shorts of David Lynch's Dumbland below. He drew, animated, spoke all the dialogue, etc himself. IMO they're fucking awful though.

Next year sometime obviously. Come on dude how should I know? I'm not the fountain of David Lynch knowledge. Go ask your local Studio Canal distributor when it's out.

Did you watch the Dumbland eps yet?

News regarding the R1 DVD release:-
Rhino Entertainment will release David Lynch's latest film Inland Empire to DVD following a limited theatrical run, through 518 Media, beginning on December 15th. Lynch, who bought the North American rights to his surreal three-hour drama last month from French producer Studio Canal, promises lots of extras for the home video release. "The DVD will be really cool. It will have so much great stuff on there. I am going to load it up and make it exactly the way I want it." According to Rhino, Inland Empire likely will be out on DVD by the summer.

Rhino Entertainment are a subsidiary of Warner, but unfortunately their prices never seem to fall though, unlike the DVDs of sister companies Warner Home Entertainment and HBO Home Video. Expect the R1 DVD to the best, since its production will be supervised by Lynch himself.

Expect no chapter stops. It's a mild irritation but I can live with it, thanks to 32* ffwd/rwd.

Agreed. Thankfully Lynch's odd obsession here usually only gets to the R1 or at least companies he's indirectly connected with.

My Mulholland Drive Dutch SE has chapter stops as did my Korean DVD.

DVD.
Oddly it's very inconsistent. I mean he supervised the remastering/5.1 remixing of Artisan's Twin Peaks S1 and New Line's FWWM, MGM's Blue Velvet, MGM's Wild at Heart and Paramount's Elephant Man; yet all those releases HAVE chapter stops (I own all those releases and can confirm that). The extras of all those releases met with his approval as well.

I'm guessing that he didn't have final say in all of those releases and the distributors weren't willing to compromise on everything.

Good point. I have Blue Velvet MGM too. Twin Peaks S1 UK R2 should be winging it's way to me.

Have you seen this Eva?

Sadly I was away while it was out. When I got home it was still showing in one cinema but too early to get to during the week and now it's finished :( . It probably shouldn't but it really bugs me how some films are out for weeks while others barely get any showings whatsoever. I'll have to wait for the DVD :(

Not out here yet. We're not getting Pan's Labyrinth in cinemas until next month, that'll give you the idea of how far behind we normally are on these types of films.

Curse of the Lacklustre Yimou Wuxia Film and The Host are also out next month in the theatres, I'll prolly go see those.

From the look of it the films so ugly it would probibly be unwatcable on a cinema screen. I have seen cheap looking films shot on DV and 16mm in cinema, but this film looks like it a bit of a joke, even on TV it looked appaulingly bad, like a 20 year old VHS tape.

I went to see it at the cinema. Parts of it look ugly in the DV, but that's because they're supposed to. Other parts look fine, because they're supposed to. It's a great film, and similar in style to Mulholland Drive. A couple of genuinely scary moments, too.

Muholland Drive is excellent, thanks Gasteropod. Fingers crossed I'll like it as much.

As for DV meh it's another method at the director's disposable. I never found Miami Vice or Collateral remotely ugly like some people. I'm sure it will be fine for me.

They were shot on very expesive DV cameras, Lynch used the cheapest in store shit he could find, they wouldnt even use them for TV shows.

Please bear in mind that David Lynch was after a certain look for specific sections of the film, and that is the look which he got out of that DV camera. Once you understand what exactly the film is about, how it works, etc. then you will understand why different parts have a different look/feel to them.

Fair enough but tbh I don't really care. I'm sure it will be better than a camcorder in the cinema :D

I wouldnt count on that, he seems to say he has now embrased the worst looking formats he can, he wants his next film to be low quality net broadcast quality, fear that I say.

What the hell are you on about? He's said that he plans to use DV from now on, due to its versatility, and that at the moment has has some ideas for his next film, but is too busy concentrating on distributing Inland Empire right now to think much about it.

I am on about exactly what I just said, distrubution of low net quality films on the net, simple really. He may well shoot it on DV, but the end product may not look like that on the net.

But what do I care he sucks balls anyway

David Lynch is a true master director IMO. As you think he sucks why are you even bothering to comment? Which is weird when you do like Dune.

I suspect there is an element of truth to both of what you say. Lynch loves DV and I'm sure will continue to use it for the reasons Gasteropod has said but he also loves the Internet for the immediacy it gives him.

The latter isn't new as Davidlynch.com members have been receiving exclusives for years.

As for Inland Empire I'm still annoyed I've been denied seeing it  . I didn't care for Lost Highway (weird for the sake of being weird) but Muholland Drive and Blue Velvet are excellent films.

I comment as I like reading about him, he is a strange person and I ussually read interviews with him :) even if sometimes he drives me insane with his responses.

I like to keep up with all cinema, even the stuff I dont like so much :D I like Dune, but hey I know he will never eveer make anything like that agin thats for sure.

MD was a film I still have no idea how to take mind you, I expect him to make crazy films from now on and maybe never step into the more story structured films we are used to seeing. I find all his films weird for the sake of being weird. The message most of the time is lost on me, they are so open ended so its up to YOU to decide what the films about. Thats why MD lost me, it was far to deep inside itself and the directors mind.
