Cool cover.

5.1 remixes only? No buy.

I guess I'll have to find the OOP Criterion somewhere. As far as I know it's the only one without remixes.

The Criterion has a better image than the MGM although it's non-anamorphic alas.

It's also the only director-approved OAR edition with the original audio mix.

And the new packaging I'm not a fan of -- but that's more the silly tin than anything else. A keep case is fine, guys.

I have the Criterion version, it has a good commentary, its uncut, and as Mark said it has the director-approved OAR. I do like the cover here, but much prefer if they simply use the original poster art, that is just beautiful.

OAR  you lot crack me up, the pictures SHIt on the Criterion, so OAR means bugger all. Its worthless owning it at all if you have a big screen. MGM blows it away in every way, even if you do miss a few mm's of image.

As far as I know The MGM transfer was supervised by the Director, he just changed his mind, like so many directors do. Its not as if its cropped to hell. and if you want mono, turn off the 5.1 and make it mono :D

I await the HD dvd of the film myself.

Hopefully they've remastered it for HD in the meantime. Cuz reportedly the old BD that Sony pulled from the market looked like arse, HD's resolution revealed all the flaws of the old master.

Saw the pics from the Old recalled HD and yes it sucked big monkey bals badly and it wasnt the HD that made it look crap, it was the fact they got a bunch of idiots to do the transfer, it was a mess becuase they transfered it wrongly, very wrongly :D

Apprently its coming out on Blu Ray in June with a new transfer etc.. guess its the same as this set above (I would guess).

Well, I don't have a fuck-off big television, and comparisons show that the Criterion image is superior. Aside from cropping, the MGM lacks detail and has been colour manipulated. I doubt Verhoeven changed his mind about the ratio, I'll bet MGM just standerdised the anamorphic ratio to 1.78 which happens to a lot of 1.66 intended films. I'm not obssessed about "a director's vision", but the Criterion looks better to my eyes. Judge for yourselves.

Good luck in your quest of getting the Criterion for less than a zillion dollars off of Ebay then.

I don't a big fuck off TV either, just a 32" Widescreen CRT and stretched non-anamorphic stuff still looks like arse. The non-anamorphic status makes the Criterion instance garbage in my mind.

I already have the Criterion. No need to pop by e-bay (which I no longer use).

Your opinions have been duly noted.

Robocop Criterion gos for very little I have found, I could have had it many times for under £15. I sold mine a few years back for only £25.

The comparions for the film, well its badly flawed as it does not take into account the anamprohic picture thats for sure when you see some screen caps. It kind of makes each image look the same in the comparions, when in reality on your own TV they will look very different, non anamprohic dvds suck badly most the time, esspecially on larger TVs, even on my old 32 inch the Criterion looks awful next to the MGM version.

The MGM picture on my UK dvd probibly has what? 200 more lines of picture than that crap Criterion dvd, thats a lot of extra resolution and makes an imense difference :) but hey.

I have a 32" WS TV and it's zoom mode is fantastic, non-ana transfers look fine on it. If you have a decent quality TV, non-ana is only an issue when you've got a 40"+ display. The DVDbeaver comparison speaks for itself, the Criterion's transfer is clearly better in every department except for vertical resolution, where the MGM is a big winner.

Oh and forgot to mention that the zoomed non-anamorphic stuff only looks shitty on my 32" if I sit up close. It looks fine when sitting 3.5-4m away for the telly as I normally do.

My TV had great Zoom mode, as do many others TV's, but its still a pants picture when the resolutions sooo low at about half of the MGM dvd. Maybe some poeple will let it pass, I hated it.

Different Strokes for different folks I guess :)

Of course if they would just get the branching right there would be no need to charge us more for a 2 disc release :D . Still it's still good news. Finally a version worth owning, the CC is overrated IMO and the UK R2/R4 releases are a mess.

It is right, its nothing more than your average layer change for me, so get a better dvd player.

Obviously but a layer change only happens once, and is almost always placed discretely. These are not. A layer change is also a pause which has a technical reason to be there, there is no reason we should ever have pauses just because it has to find extra footage. You say yourself it's noticeable.

When I bought my Pioneer DVD Player it was there top of the range model (about 2 years ago), and is obviously only beaten by newer models.

Artisan eons before MGM released Robocop got it right with T2, as have Fox on a few occasions. It's certainly not the fault of a cheap DVD Player, it's a badly encoded disc no matter how you look at it.

Not that it matters now finally a decent SE is coming. I'd have preferred it was 1 disc and drop the Theatrical Cut but that's just a niggle.

In this instance the TC is uncessesary as it's only a censored version with no alternate footage of interest.

Some people think that the Extended Cut is way too comical and over-the-top for it's own good, lessening the impact of the violence. These people don't realise that the violence is supposed to be comical and OTT.
