Lust, Caution - Ang Lee - Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Joan Chen

Post by thelostdragon »

Director Ang Lee’s new film, following his Academy Award win for directing “Brokeback Mountain,” is an espionage thriller set in WWII-era Shanghai. Asian cinema icon Tony Leung (“Hero,” “In the Mood for Love”) stars as Mr. Yee, a powerful political figure in 1940s Shanghai. Tang Wei, a rising star in mainland China, makes her feature film debut as Wang Jiazhi, a young woman who gets swept up in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with Mr. Yee.

Cheers LD.

480p (30Mb) - http://images.apple.com/movies/focus_fe ... _h480p.mov
720p (81Mb) - http://images.apple.com/movies/focus_fe ... _h720p.mov
1080p (125Mb) - http://images.apple.com/movies/focus_fe ... h1080p.mov

If in doubt download the 480p (or 720p).

EDIT: I just watched the trailer and this looks excellent. It's good to see Ang Lee making Chinese films again. It looks very ITMFLeque.

The local arthouse theatre (which I keep forgetting that we have) is gonna hold a special preview followed by Q&A (with Ang Lee!!) on Jan 14th. I'd like to go but it's on a Monday... hopefully it's not on too late.

Edit: It's actually on Dec 14th (Fri night woohoo) but I have a piss up that evening...

Shame on you :D

I detest visiting my local Multiplex with it's Neanderthal lemming infested hell.

If I had to pick between my local arthouse and multiplex showing the same film even with it's much bigger screen I'd pick the arthouse any day, no contest. You actually get people who take cinema seriously there.

The multiplex always has some tosser either talking, using their mobile or eating popcorn REALLY FUCKING LOUDLY! The last time I went I had to endure Surround Sound Munching, not a nice experience.

Hmm it takes a lot for me to give up booze... might make an exception. Could always go out afterwards. I'll see if I can find someone to watch it with.

Why?

I recently saw "Sex and Lucia" with my Mum and that has erect penis' and more :D (they came as something of a surprise). It also has several incredibly hot Latino woman too 8)

As to the film it's good but has way too much gratuitous sex. It just gets silly by half way through.

Damn, I wouldn't even watch Basic Instinct with my Mum, never mind a film with an erect cock. Your family must be very "comfortable" with each other.

Really? What's to be embarrassed about? It's a decent thriller.
Markgway wrote:Your family must be very "comfortable" with each other.
We are. It's just sex. We even talked about it afterwards.

My Mum thought the male/female phallic imagary (of which there are lots) were cleverly placed. I thought they got a bit tedious and the film had way too much sex, it ruined it. The two shots of erect penis' she found annoying (one of them was so absurd everyone burst out laughing), which is odd when one minds female genitalia.

The twists and way the film panned out were otherwise clever though. Get rid of 3/4 of the sex and it would've been a whole lot better.

I'd probably give it 6 out of 10. For the women 9 out of 10 8)

The film is an interesting case of an Arthouse film with erect penis' being given an 18 rated whereas porn gets R18. It certainly wasn't pornographic but interesting still the same.

I think it's down to us having different backgrounds. Working class people aren't used to being so touchy-feely with regards to sex and family etc. I never even got "the talk" when I was a teenager.

Most of us would just be like "it's a cock!!" :D

I wouldn't class an erect penis as hardcore. Unless some gal was sucking on it.

I wouldn't say our family is working class, more middle class but then most families today are middle class. I think.

I never "got" the talk either but if I asked my parents answered the question. Most Brits are particularly uncomfortable about talking about sex to their kids, but when it's two adults watching a movie I don't see why, but fair enough.

There were lots of shots of different types of holes and the one Light House, it wasn't very subtle :D

No, I was saying MY family is working class, and by implication yours wasn't. At least that's the impression I get, which you've somewhat confirmed.

I'm 28 and I still wouldn't ask my parents about sex (if I needed to, lol).

I know you were ;)

If at our age you need to ask about "how to do it" there is something wrong :D but in the context of a film I do talk to my Mum about sex. I wouldn't my Dad but that's more to do with our different relationship than any embarrassment on either of our parts.
Holes?? :D
Yep. I'm actually probably giving "Sex and Lucia" a disservice as on it's own merit it's an interesting and certainly well made/acted film but all the silly and pointless sex spoilt it for me. Fine sex is central to the story I got that half an hour in.

It does have 3 hot (2 especially) dark Latino naked women though. That's worth repeating.

I saw it at the cinema (a one off showing) but already have the DVD. I've kept the DVD as I'm going to re-evaluate sometime next year before I decide to keep or probably sell it on.

Back on topic this is being released in the UK on the 4th of January.

There is a special screening on the 14th near me with Q&A via Satellite in London from Ang Lee :D . I don't usally like those much though. I don't really feel the need to meet the people behind the movie. I may go though.

I'm seeing a new print of Raging Bull this Monday with a Q&A from the Editor. I'll see how that goes.

It's a shame they made it so darned difficult to tell the versions apart. :D

I saw that cover art over at DVD Active, the old and far superior cover art can be seen here:

I'm looking forward to seeing it uncut in the cinema next month. It passed 18 without any silly NC-17 style cuts.

Director Lee defends actor banned from Chinese media:

It's not surprising, but still a pity.

So whose seen this?

I thought it was excellent. I wonder why Universal haven't released it on HD-DVD. I'll definitely be picking up the BD. If you like Brokeback Mountain you'll probably like this too.

The older Lust, Caution art is far superior.

The film or the cover art? Yes and Yes.

If I were to buy the DVD I'd likely pick up the UK DVD. It's uncut without insisting upon advertising that it is.
