Classical music - who listens to it and suggestions please!

Post by degeneration »

Despite loving heavy metal and punk music, I also have a love good classical music. From the really energetic, loud, fireworks style music, to the beautifully melodic and enchanting pieces that cause me to stop waht I'm doing and enter an amazing dream world...

But, my knowledge of what is good etc is extremely limited. So I'm looking for good recommendations from anyone else in the know.

What I like so far (although this isn't everything):

faster, louder ones - 1812 Overture, William tell overture, Rhapsody In blue,

Melodic, tranquil ones - Canon, Blue Danube Waltz

bit of everything - Planets Suite (particularly Jupiter - amazing), Peer Gynt Suite (Morning for the tranquil bit and In The Hall Of The Mountain King for the more up beat)

Others - Hungarian Rhapsody 2, Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet and Cinderella, some other bits of Tchaikovsky, although not sure what bits!!

So if there are any particular pieces of classical music that you can recommend based on the type of things I've mentioned I'd much appreciate it!

FYI my FAVOURITE pieces are: Jupiter from the Planets Suite, Rhapsody In Blue and Canon by Pachelbel.

Cheers!!!

Wasnt Jupiter used as the basis for the hymn I Vow To Thee My Country (and then the rugby song "World In Union"?) I'm sure that's from the Planets Suite.

WOrld In Union, definitely, don't know the other one.

And I hate them for using it for that Rugby song... now when I hear it, rather than appreciating the music my head puts the bloody words in!! So fecking annoying.

It's definitely the same tune as "I Vow To Thee My Country".
I know what you mean, I end up putting in the World In Union words too, even when it's singing the hymn!! :D
Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 (Franz Liszt - sp?) has been used in many a classic cartoon I think (eg Cat Concerto, Rhapsody Rabbit).

Hungarian Rhapsody 2 was also used as the duelling piano scene between daffy and donald duck in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?!!

The last classic song I have gotten was "Final Metal (1965)" by Sviridov Georgii. It is the original melody which they used for the "Metal Gear Solid" soundtrack.

Oh and I love "Bolero".

I like Paul Potts single :D . The War of the Worlds album is outstanding which is definitely classical in places.

Other classical music is also excellent (that piece from The Shining and 2001) but overall I don't listen to it.

:D That's harsh. I thought he was good (especially by the standards of where he came from).

In the general public eye I think he'll be forgotten after a short while, but for opera fans he might not.
