Potter teen will not face charges

Post by bradavon »

A French teenager who was arrested for publishing his own complete translation of the latest Harry Potter novel online will not be prosecuted.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6943650.stm

WTF, he only posted it so people could read the bloody thing in their mother tongue. If the distributors weren't so greedy and deliberately delayed the French language release until October (and thereby forcing people to buy it twice) this wouldn't have been necessary.

Why would they be buying it twice? The article says that the fan translation was available online, so it would've been free.

They could've just sent out C&D letters, like anime licensees do to fansubbers.

Because they buy it once to get it in English and then again to get it in French, simple.
Shingster wrote:Obviously the concept of Copyright is lost on you. :D
Nope, but clearly what I said is lost on you. If the book was available in French at launch as it should've been there would be no need to do this.

Nope, as usual you have stretched your miniscule, sub-sapiens IQ to the limit and failed to realise that it doesn't matter when Rowling's book was being released in France/French, copyright infringement is still copyright infringement. It is going to be released in French, they just have to wait a few more weeks is all!

By your logic it'd be ok for me to distribute pirate copies of The Bourne Ultimatum because it hasn't come out over here, or maybe a closer analogy would be if I distributed Lee Chang Dong's Secret Sunshine through a UK site complete with English subs. All are illegal infringements on copyright and the relevant distributors would be well within their rights to go after me.

So as usual Brad it is yourself who failed to understand the point of my post. But then, you being monumentally fucking clueless is to be expected, isn't it? :P

Hmm, maybe a little. :D
Anyway, Brad's free to have the final say and have a pop back at me if he wants, I think i've made my opinion on the utter pointlessness of this thread clear enough already. French kid breaks an extremely obvious law, gets arrested, all charges dropped. Boo-fucking-hoo for him.

I'll let this be my final post.

Brad and Shingster were lovers once.

But Shingster refused to "do anal" so Brad dumped him.

The bitch.

Shingster's always had it in for me I don't know why. He cannot help himself sometimes.

I know there was copyright infringement. I never said there wasn't.

It sounds like they used some common sense.

If you were in charge Romero virtually the entire world's population would either be in jail for life or shot dead. That's always your immediate response whenever someone does something wrong, throwing the book at someone isn't always the answer.

Well... I partly agree with brad about a kid being arrested and in trouble for just some translation for fellow Potter fans, just out of love for the book and without any intention to profit from his hard work, is a bit harsh. The kid is 16 years old. Yeah, it's copyright-infringement and it's illegal etc... I understand publishers being upset and that the cops should handle stuff like this instead of going after actual criminals etc... but yeah... this isnt REAL crime, is it!? I'm glad they let the kid off with a warning.

Releasing the book in different languages at the same time, is impossible with a book like this, as too many people would be 'in' in the secret while it's being translated, and without a doubt the ending etc would be leaked out well before it hits the store-shelves. If you want to read the book in your own language, just wait till it gets released. Who even bothers reading books (as in real text books) over the internet anyway? It's not really comfortable reading.

It's 'illegal' so Brad is automatically wrong in his disapproval of the treatment of this kid by angry publishers and the police? Maybe ... but I agree with Brad that this is all a bit overblown, being world-news etc. It's just a kid who made a translation for fellow Potter fans without any interest of finacial gain. Who cares? Just take it off the net, give the kid a warning and ask him if he'd like to be a translator for the publisher ina few years, and that's that.

Only some would be shot dead......... the majority would simply be shot in the face.

The kid was wrong to post the translation from a legal standpoint but as he wasn't in it for the money he shouldn't have gone to jail. He made a mistake. Case closed.

Why would a few million people whom can't read English bother to buy a text heavy book that they can't understand? Sure they are many English-speakers in France, but there are probably many more who don't know it. Buying subbless/dubbless DVDs is one thing, but buying a foreign language novel?

Exactly the reason I imagine why they let him off.

That's an odd statement to make considering your stance on downloading music, isn't that exactly the same? Besides how is it automatically wrong just because something is illegal? Some laws make absolutely no sense, just because I abide by them it doesn't mean I think they make any sense.

If it was any other book we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I agree with Mark, what he did was wrong from a copyright standpoint, no doubt but he wasnt making money and just helping fans so maybe jail is OTT. A warning/fine would have sufficed?

Yo Brad... notice that questionmark at the end of that statement? I was actually agreeing with you and questioning the harsh treatment of the others towards YOU. I was agreeing it was 'illegal' (see the sarcastic quotes?) but I didnt see why that would mean YOU would automatically be 'wrong' by sticking up for this kid.

Some went a bit overboard in their black-white view on the matter (technically illegal >>> brad's wrong!).

Everyone knows exactly where I stand on this issue, and on downloading music etc. I dont feel it's a real crime. It becomes a real crime when you then go on and try making money from it by selling it to others.

Esepcially music I dont have a moral problem with, cause the recordcompanies take the biggest share anywhere, after ripping the costumer off by ridiculous high prices (we europeans are getting screwed), etc etc.

I do buy all my movies and pretty much all games (except PC games) legally and in the store. That's because they ARE good priced for what they offer. Although I do always wait for sales.

Anyway, that's a whole different discussion.

It's kinda funny that even when I agree with you, Brad ... you somehow want to get into a debate with me about it ;)

I know you were agreeing with me generally but missed that question mark.

Out of interest how much would a good price for a CD be to you?

Depending on the cd (number of songs, packaging, etc), I'd say 10 euro.

Pretty much the same as I'd pay for a barebones DVD.

In Hong Kong I bought cd's for 80-120 HK dollar I believe... which is about 10 euro.

I feel that's a fair price.

You mean RRP (excluding sales)?

I'd say £7.99 is sufficient for a new release.

I wouldn't pay more for a single disc.
