Single CD retail versions are rumoured to be in stores by early 2008.
Did you see what's in the £40 box though? Still way overkill IMO, christ two vinyls.
THIS CONSISTS OF THE NEW ALBUM, IN RAINBOWS, ON CD
AND ON 2 X 12 INCH HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL RECORDS.
A SECOND, ENHANCED CD CONTAINS MORE NEW SONGS, ALONG WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND ARTWORK.
THE DISCBOX ALSO INCLUDES ARTWORK AND LYRIC BOOKLETS.
ALL ARE ENCASED IN A HARDBACK BOOK AND SLIPCASE.

Its a gimic anyway, as its not in any shops anywhere its the Only way to get the album on their site, so really it does not matter at all.
They are trying something new, and boy they are going to fail. It does not even get entered into any charts becuase its not available in shops and many TV stations will not play the videos either, basically this gimic is crap, they deserve eveyrthing that comes to them. But I am sure they have cash to fail anyway, so it wont hurt them.

You've not needed to have music in the shops to get it into the UK charts for at least a year now, keep up
Both Radiohead, Prince and the like are experimenting with new ways to get their music out to the masses, it's not like they need the money. They both know so many people now download their music illegally, Radiohead may as well give it away.
This also is a great way to create buzz for the album before it's official launch later on, when no doubt this offer will be over.

No this is not eligable for any charts, becuase its ONLY sold thru their site, so no charts at all. Its not like its sold online like other songs on many sites everywhere, its not its ONLY on the Radiohead site, so its not alowed in any charts or on TV etc..
Well according to the news anyway, which seemed right to me.

I know. I wasn't correcting that, you said it had to be sold "in shops" to be eligible which isn't correct.romerojpg wrote:No this is not eligable for any charts, becuase its ONLY sold thru their site, so no charts at all. Because they finished their EMI contract with Hail to the Thief, and have decided to self-release this album. What the hell is wrong with that? They're not going to fail at all, they'll make loads of money. £40 per box set which LOADS of people will buy, my mate has that pre-ordered already, then all the donations for the mp3s which don't cost the band anything to distribute, well barely anything (bandwith obviously), and then the regular CD which is released next year, which I will be buying!

I may buy the CD, depending on whether or not I like the whole album. I've already heard Videotape off of it, that's a beautiful song.

Why not just use FLAC or WAVE (which many MP3 Players support) if you're going to use bitrates above 192Kbps. If you're that bothered I'm surprised you don't.
192Kbps is the top end for me, any more is overkill. I use 128Kbps most of the time, it means I can fit my entire music collection into 12Gb and thus all on to a Mini MP3 Player (soon). Sometimes I think I can hear the subtle differences in the nuisance between 128Kbps and 192Kbps, other times I cannot hear any difference whatsoever. What I can notice is the extreme amount of disc space 192Kbps needs.
Hell I listen to my WMAs at 64Kbps on my current MP3 Player (I can fit most of my 12Gb of MP3s on that way), which sounds good enough to me, noticeably inferior but perfectly fine. Thankfully now Mini MP3 Players are finally coming that have more than 8Gb I can retire my WMAs.
I'd only want 192Kbps here so I could burn it to CD if I wished.

Not all MP3 Players can handle VBR. IMO VBR is a bit of a waste of time.

I haven't really listened to it much yet, just sampled all the tracks. Johnny Greenwood finally remembered how to properly play his guitar (there is guitar play on almost every track), That makes it their best since OK Computer by default. (Their previous three albums did grow on me, after listening to them several dozen times. Hail to the Thief is worth having for Go to Sleep alone.)
But good on them for releasing the album for free. Not like it makes much difference, since musicians make the majority of their money from concerts and songwriting royalties, not record sales. I hope that they tour more, especially in my neck of the woods.
