Thanks Mark. Sadly it was pretty much a given the non-USA releases would still be the shorter cut.

I'll be getting The Shining BD for sure, 2001 probably (I need to re-watch my R3 first, I remember it being good but not great) and Clockwork Orange eventually.

The Shining is the only Kubrick film I like is brilliant, with Clockwork Orange being decent.

Still, the shorter version is the director's cut. Not that I'm saying that makes it better, just that at least it wasn't hacked at by a studio.

The longer cut wasn't hacked at by studios but another Kubrick approved cut that he wanted to be released only in The States. That said I don't think the extra footage adds anything, both work fine.

Most prefer the longer cut if it helps.

And the longest cut, the Premerie cut, hasn't been seen since 1980!

It'll be nice to see the Shining in high definition. I sure hope FMJ is a different transfer than what was used for the original HD disc. That was pure shit.

But money talks: Paramount and DreamWorks Animation together will receive about $150 million in financial incentives for their commitment to HD DVD, according to two Viacom executives with knowledge of the deal but who asked not to be identified.

It is good. The USA cover art is the same.

From that earlier link:
The two studios may have left themselves wiggle room, however. Paramount’s agreement to use only HD DVD is limited to only 18 months. And Paramount noted that no films directed by Steven Spielberg were included in the deal “as his films are not exclusive to either format.” Mr. Spielberg is a co-founder of DreamWorks SKG, a unit of Paramount.
I bet this means Spielberg films owned by Paramount will be released on both.

What does Paramount have to do with Warner? These Kubrick films are Warner titles. Warner have always supported both HD formats.

Thanks Salty.

Good to see the video looks decent, it's a shame the Mono hasn't been included. I hope the 5.1 isn't too intrusive. It's so hard to get a perfect 5.1. I wish they'd just include both, so as to please everyone. On the other hand if it's done well The Shining in 5.1 should sound awesome.

Thanks Salty. The reviewer is wrong the R1 DVD is also 1.66:1 but non-anamorphic.
