Post by bradavon »

Amy Winehouse's second album Back to Black is set to be the biggest-selling album of the year.

I suspect her music is "good single material" whereby the rest of it is rubbish. I'm too wary about buying it.

I find her voice irritating and affected (and I wouldn't touch her fanny with yours...) although like Sam said: her cover of 'Valerie' isn't bad.

Indeed Lourdes, I think what's most shocking about Amy Winehouse's success is that she's done so whilst being the first ever musician to be addicted to class-A drugs!

She's considered boring by the self-appointed cultural elite because she doesn't stick needles in her veins or snort half of Colombia up her nose.

No but she does/did smoke weed while writing some of her songs, which explains why the lyrics don't make a lot of sense - "If you were a boat I'd sail you to the shore/If you were a piece of wood I'd nail you to the floor" etc (!) :D

Yeah but Katie makes crap music now, she started ok and turned into a turd. Amy is 10 times the singer she will ever be.

Apparently Amy had sold most the albums before the drugs news came out, so its not down to the drug news. Bet it helped sell a few this Christmas mind you.

Since when did Katie Melua do drugs?

Not so. Her single recently went to number 1 and all her albums do well.

She's not tabloid material though and is happier staying well out of it.

Really? I never knew that.

It's worth making a distinction from Class A and more weaker drugs. Weed is really no different from Alcohol, both are equally addictive too. I'm not saying it should be legal just that the two are not in the same league.

Some of the best song writing ever produced makes no "initial" sense.

Why do you say that? Her style is very much the same as he new album yet it's suddenly a turd? Her first album is the best, the second a little weaker but still good. Her third is better.

She's also one of the naturally beautiful women over "our" age range around. She comes across as "normal" instead of all up herself.

I'm not saying I like her songs... just that she's not considered newsworthy or "cool".

Um, in what way does that contradict what I said??

Selling records doesn't mean she's considered "cool" by the media, or the cultural elite who slag her off; it just means a lot of middle of the road people still by records.

She's thought of as dull, in a similar way to Cliff Richard. If he confessed to smoking crack as a youngster his street cred would go up a thousand-fold. It's the society we live in.

But that aside -- I do think her songs are pretty dreary.

Whinehouse usually sounds like a Cat being strangled.....

Yeah, I'd give her one.

Oh sorry. It's a weird thing. Melua is not just like Meg Ryan. The truth is most (not all) celebs who appear in the papers are there because deliberately or inadvertently they put themselves there.

Melua isn't interested so doesn't do anything to put herself in the papers and thus isn't.
Markgway wrote:Um, in what way does that contradict what I said??
It doesn't hugely, just that she isn't considered boring is all.
Markgway wrote:it just means a lot of middle of the road people still by records.
Online sales are also considered sales now too, many of which are bought by kids. What do you mean by "middle of the road"? Most people buy their music still.
Markgway wrote:She's thought of as dull, in a similar way to Cliff Richard.
In tabloids yes but not musical press. At least she didn't use to be.
Markgway wrote:But that aside -- I do think her songs are pretty dreary.
To be fair that is the style.
