IVL only have the Hong Kong rights. OPIUM was released by the now defunct BCI.
I heard the Well Go was frame-cut
That was done by Celestial and their shortcut remastering technique.

Unless a distributor goes back to the negatives all versions will be the same.

I have the wellgo Heroic Ones and i saw no difference with the original dvd which was why Grim's statement confused me.Opium is a great looking disc, managed to get it from Axelmusic just before it went OOP.

Depends if the IVL was taken from the same master.

That I do not know I'm afraid.
Do you know of a German DVD, its anamorphic but apparently an up-convert from the non anamorphic master.

If the IVL of The Heroic Ones was non-anamorphic then there's a chance it escaped frame cuts.

Not absolutely sure but I believe the first couple of batches weren't frame cut.

Are you talking about the Blu Ray in reference to early ones escaping frame cuts?
An uncut BD would be hard to find now I guess.
I have noticed on later IVL DVDs the newly edited trailer for Heroic Ones was anamorphic.

No, the IVL DVD.
Celestial's HD masters are frame cut.
Non-anamorphic doesn't apply to BD.

Someone over Bluray.com reckons the Black Mask blu-ray released in HK is longer than the mei ah disc.

"Yes its different from Mei Ah release. Mei Ah dvd has ridiculous cuts like the dude cutting off his own hand, his leg getting ran over by the tractor, Jet impaling a baddie on spikes then bending the spikes forward, Francois being shot through her shoulder, stupid shit like that. This version restores all that. Keep in mind that Taiwanese version is even more violent. "

That's promising. Even if it's an upscale, might be worth it for a more complete version than the current DVD, which is more violent than the old Mei Ah DVD.

Have you ordered one, Salty?

and it's in the wrong language.

Also picked up My Father Is A Hero which looks surprisingly strong. Dirt and specs are present but overall the print is in terrifc shape. It is a bit soft and it could be sharper but colors and skintones look spot on. I think it's safe to say this will easily best Dragon Dynasty's upcoming English dubbed blu-ray.

LOL tell me about it. While we're on the subject of DD, here's an interesting article about their parent company Vivendi Entertainment concerning a few recent HK films.

I also recieved Black Mask and My Father is a Hero this week. In my opinion MFIAH is one of K&R's best transfers yet.

What's the Black Mask transfer like? And has it got the oversaturated turquoise tint that the Taiwanese cut has?

The transfer isn't perfect but far better than I had expected. Dirt and debris turn up randomly and there is an overrall softness to the image but all in all it's more than acceptable. Darker scenes are dominated by a blue metalic tint while daytime scenes lean towards brown. Colors and contrast seem accurate with strong blacks and piercing reds. There is a bit DNR but it wasn't overkill. I'm willing to bet that the Lionsgate disc still looks better but it's a no brainer as to which disc is the one to own.

Did they ever give a shit though?

It's just sad that the fanboys will lap it up regardless.

:? . It's the fanboys who complain the most. Many of the earlier DD DVDs were excellent. I guess it's all about Cine-asia these days.

It's good to hear My Father is a Hero is good. I'm happy with the Remastered Mei Ah DVD myself.
