OMG Woolworths and MFI have both gone bust. It's on the News now.

It says the larger big city stores in Woolworths are causing it to have massive debts, the smaller ones make money. It's been going nearly a century. It says 25,000 people are employed by Woolworths.

I cannot say I'm entirely surprised though, how often do you shop there? I barely ever do. They mostly sell tat.

Yeah I never bothered with Woolies once i grew out of toys - or to be more accurate, my parents stopped me buying toys!

I bought some peanut M&M's from Woolworths the other day ( 8) ), but I barely shop there either, it's just a shop you expect to always be there though.

That's why I found it shocking. If Woolworths can go bust, whose safe? I bought my niece's 1st year birthday present there the other day but that was the first time in months.

I'd never but a CD or DVD from them.

Do you have Woolworths in Holland? I'm guessing not. It's actually not overpriced, sure DVD prices are but then they almost always are in shops.

The problem IMO is they mostly sell tat. They sell all manner of things from CDs, DVDs, clothes, toys, sweets and all sorts of other things but the clothes are of low quality, as are lots of the other things they sell. They're reasonably priced though.

So it's a cheapy cheapy store?

I was thinking it was something like 'De Bijenkorf' here in Holland, which is a pretentious big store which sells all kinds of stuff, but just too expensive...

Woolworths is a pretty cheap store.
Looks like I won't be having an interview for temp work with them now though...

Woolworths is a mid-price store and a long running chain.

Sad to see another one bite the dust.

I occasionally buy discs from them. You do get bargains.

They don't sell BDs, that tells you their place in the market.

Why is it rubbish? You haven't given a good reason.

Hi fellas/ladies,

How is everyone? :)

I'll give you a reason why Woolworths are crap. When dvds first came out, they used to put the discs in crappy cardboard sleeves, and when you got home your discs would be scratched to smithereens. Aside from that, quite a few things that they sell (e.g. DIY stuff, kitchenware), whilst not differing wildly in quality, you could get cheaper in the likes of Poundland, Wilkinsons. Also, in terms of home entertainment media, their promotions are usually inferior to competitors such as HMV and Zavvi. They also have zero internet brand presence.

Well said. I agree.

Their electronics are of poor quality too. You cannot even use the argument "they're cheap", as the likes of Comet sell better quality and as cheap kit.

Yes first time I bought a DVD in Woolies, they were kept behind the counter, and it was scratched to oblivion AND put in the case upside down!

I hate when they do that. They used to with singles, so you could see the top of the CD from the outside.
