Hey,
I recently installed WindowsXP again and also installed Windows Media Player 10. I installed DivX and Xvid. I don't know why, but only with the combination of both these codecs, WMP plays .avi-files properly.
Now I tried to watch the trailer for 'The Promise' which Tom had posted (thnx btw) and the image judders heavily... like a computer game for which the computer is too slow for. It doesn't move fluently, but rather does it show image after image (and jumps over a lot of frames in-between), like a scratched DVD would play. The sound is fine, though. I never had that problem with .wmv-files.
Oh and WinAmp plays the files, fine!
WMP doesn't play .wmv-files properly... huh?

yep videoLAN does about 90% of all video files... then install FDDshow, the quick time and wmp alternatives and your sorted for anything the net might through at you... in fact I will compile a list with links that people can add to and help keep up to date... good plan batman! (list coming on monday unless someone beats me to it!!)

This is a common mistake people make, like .doc files it's just a wrapper for whatever video codec you like.thelostdragon wrote:I don't know why, but only with the combination of both these codecs, WMP plays .avi-files properly.
WMP cannot play DivX or Xvid files natively (and I doubt it ever will). It can play AVI files encoded in Microsoft's own video AVI codec and some others but they're all very old codecs and equally rubbish.
WMV like MPEG is a proper video codec in the strictest sense AVI is different it per say doesn't contain any codec, on it's own.
