Heads must roll because of these communication failings. This is horrible:
Families of 11 US miners found dead have expressed anger and disbelief at communications failings which led them to believe their loved ones were alive.
Relatives had been celebrating a "miracle" when it emerged only one of the 12 West Virginia miners, trapped since a blast on Monday, had survived.
A witness said one relative lunged for the mine official who broke the news and had to be wrestled to the ground.
The critically ill survivor, Randal McCloy Junior, 27, is in hospital.
Earlier, rescuers had found the body of a 13th miner left in a mine cart some 3000 metres inside the mine, separate to the other work party.
Yeah, I saw this in CNN this morning. Very tragic. Especially when you first get the news almost everyone survived, and then they turn out to be dead anyway. Idiots.
I didnt hear much of the news though, but I think I heard there was something else wrong as well!? Something with debris or whatever!? I had to leave so couldnt really follow the whole story.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...
Why all this fuss about a US mine and 11 miners? Last spring there were at least 2 mining accidents in China with nearly 200 people involved... heck we even had an accident here.
Did that reach media in the same way?! Atleast for THIS forum we should be more concerned with the Chinese miners
I'm just a bit fed up with all this focus on the US all the time. It sucks. We all know it. So why keep drooling over everything that happens over there
Still telling someone that their loved ones are alive and then retracting that statement is a really lousy thing to do indeed... But I'm pretty sure it was all due to misunderstanding, miscommunication or human error and not in any way deliberate... I'm pretty sure the offical is feeling bad enough as it is.
we end up talking about the US so much because their press lives on creating fear and misery for its people... china on the other hand is pretty much the opposite in terms of its press.
as fir the 'theyre alive' fiasco, by all accounts (as in reports from the non tabloid press) someone overheard a discussion between the rescue command centre and some of the rescuers on the ground and got the wrong end of the stick, then decided in there wisdom to spread the word. basically they discovered that the minors had survived the intial explosion and had moved en masse to an area further in the tunnel they thought was safe (but of course gasses killed them there). thats hardly a statement saying theyre all still alive but it was taken as such and now the people who were risking their lives trying to save them are getting stick... it kinda fustrates me...
definately. dont get me wrong, the fact that it happened at all is a terrible thing, and i can fully appreciate the loved ones of the victims wanting to lash out, i just feel the media and the general public are encouraging a very negative direction for this anger.

Exactly PLUS American media is shown all over the world.
It often gets more coverage than UK news in the UK.
Take those recent hurricanes they were all over TV but we heard virtually nothing of the hurricanes at the same time in South America.
