So's... uhm... I watched those videos ... and I thought...

WTF?! What's this got to do with anything...?! Dogs and cats... Eh!?

Then I read the top of the page, and my question changed slightly...

Who-t-f would want to wear a cat/dog fur coat?!

That's just... insane.

(Not to diss anyone dissing the furtrade or anything... I understand mink, and to a certain extent other "exotic" animals - but cats and dogs?! Achwell, synthetic has always been good enough for me anyways...).
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

How's it any different? Both at the end of the day are fur and at the point you'd wear them would look basically the same anyway.

Now this is a law the government should ban, the selling of furs. Why haven't they?

If fur is banned, then shouldnt leather be banned as well?

Nah, leather is different; athough some of the hippies who post on these forums would disagree. Large livestock animals like cattle and sheep are a renewable resource and are treated humanely for the most part.

Cattle are used for functional purposes like "useful" clothing and meat.

True, cattle are bred for that purpose. I dont wear leather though (but do eat meat).
Which do you think is worse though, I mean when you think about it, it still sounds pretty horrific, you are "bred" simply to be killed at some point? :? But its OK because its "useful".

as the person who's got no problem with the fur trade (so im not too sure I qualify as a hippy :p) I find this quite a hypocritical statement. Things with fur are a renewable resource just like any other animal. Whilst there are of course exceptions (which the anti lobby use as if they are the standard example) creatures who are killed for their fur are killed relatively humanely (personally i dont think any killing can be described as humane, but compared to say how cattle is killed) because its in the killers interests to keep the fur in as good a condition as possible.

As usual I find myself on the unpopular side of a debate where I don't actualy personally like the thing i'm defending. I don't wear fur or even much leather . I will however defend the fur trade vigorously until people start thinking for themselves rather than just jumping on a bandwagon which uses half truths and extreme examples to forward its case. Use the internet. watch documentaries. you'll never have all the facts but at least collect some so you can make informed decisions about such things.

Good point there Mordib.

For me personally the sheer fact they're being murdered is enough to make me angry.
grim_tales wrote:If fur is banned, then shouldnt leather be banned as well?
Yep but the crucial difference is cattle aren't a rare species. Man has already wiped out thousands of species from the planet I'd hate for us to do the same with say tiger.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Large livestock animals like cattle and sheep are a renewable resource and are treated humanely for the most part.
A live sentient being a resource, maybe I should refer to you as merely a resource?

Treated humanely keep living in your ivory tower. They're treated anything but humanely for the most part, yes humanely to an extent but for the most part yeah right.

Forcing cattle, sheep, chickens etc . . . into crates far to small and moving them hundreds of miles across country isn't humane.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Cattle are used for functional purposes like "useful" clothing and meat.
Using your argument I'd say a fur coat is very functional, it would keep you very warm in winter.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Nah, leather is different; athough some of the hippies who post on these forums would disagree.
Was that comment necessary?

For all the talk of "vegetarians always causing a problem" it's in my experience the devout meat eaters who moan first. Have I ever called you a meat eating murderer (directly)?
grim_tales wrote:I dont wear leather though (but do eat meat).
What ever? Many work places would frown upon you if you didn't wear leather shoes. Me I don't but then I've found leather alternatives, which look and feel like leather.

Two of the three links in Grim's link to Imports don't work (they've been copy/pasted not linked properly) but the middle one does.

It's an interesting read, focusing mainly on China and even Guangzhou where Wong Fei Hung comes from I believe.

That Seal cull in Canada is evil, nothing short of it. In a Western society too.

That's horrible. Makes me want to kill people who wear fur.

I remember this anti-fur campaign advert from donkey's ago where a supermodel is shown parading down a catwalk covered in blood. It was tough to stomach. It was even given a '18' certificate.

Brad - I dont think I've got any leather clothes (not even my shoes but not really sure), my wallet is leather though so there goes my argument.. ;)
I wouldnt class cattle as a "renewable resource" it sounds callous.
