Where can you get a good 5.1 Speakers system for under £150

Post by slasher13 »

Hey there,

I have got a new dvd player which has an inbuilt DTS decoder as well as dolby 5.1. I am on the lookout for a good/reasonable speaker system and ampilier. Does anyone have any recommendation please?

I'd really recommend against using the DVD Players decoder. It uses analogue connections for a start, has lots of silly cables and after comparing the 5.1 analogue decoder in my previous DVD player to the optical out (coaxial is as good) I definitely stuck with optical.

It's not a little difference is big. The 5.1 analogue outputs are really only useful for SACD or DVD-A support if your DVD Player supports those (you'd know if it did), as an amp which can handle the much higher bandwidth needed for those two costs a bomb and is fairly new technology too.

I'd buy a decent amp and separate speakers BUT use either your DVD Players Coaxial or Optical output. I bought my speakers from Richer Sounds and Amp (a proper full size Home Cinema Sony one) from Unbeatable, not that I'd recommend buying from Unbeatable any more.

But Richer Sounds is worth a look. If you wan an all in one job I can't helps sorry as they don't really appeal to me (the speakers are usually far to small for starters).

I've just seen you want to spend under £150 so separates are probably out (maybe not check at Richer Sounds).
