They never are

Thanks though Salty I have a £10 gift voucher to use. It looks like I'll finally find a bargain at HMV. I'd have picked up MOF too if it was the SE. I already own Collateral and ACP. I'll pop in this w/e.

AVOID! They're 4:3. I'm pretty sure open matt not P&S but still they're not a patch on the R1 versions. Vertigo is fine though.

I'd have picked up The Birds easily otherwise.

I think Rear Window is anamorphic widescreen, but you're right about The Birds. Vertigo isn't fine, alas. It's also anamorphic, but only has that woeful 5.1 track. I'm holding off for the upcoming R1 reissue.

Got 'The Untouchables' £3.99. :)

Yeah my bad Rear Window is anamorphic WS. I'll rephrase "Vertigo is fine though for me" :D

There are fair few other bargains in store and online (about £1 cheaper online):

Gladiator: 3 Disc SE - £6.99
Sideways - £3.49
To Catch a Thief - £2.99
Shawshank Redemption: 1 Disc though - £2.99
Matrix Revolutions 2 Disc: £2.99
Resident Evil: £2.99

I think the new version of Gladiator doesn't have the DTS-ES track...

It doesn't.

I'm not sure. I'd like to see the extended cut (which I hear adds something to the film) but the 2 Disc extras look better and it's missing DTS too.

I'll pick it up one day but really want the R1 for both cuts.

The documentary on the new Glaiatr is stunning, hours long and so packed full of goods its well worth getting, the commentaryt is fine too. DTS is pants anyway, no difference.

Maybe there is no difference if you haven't got a good enough setup. On my (properly configured) system there is a HUGE difference between the Dolby Digital & DTS tracks on Gladiator. The DTS track is crystal clear & pin sharp on my system.

Agreed it's worth warning of, disagreed it's shit.

I also agree the DTS is better than the DD5.1 on Gladiator I remember comparing it. I've not seen the Gladiator: SE extras but a silly Making Of rarely interests me. A documentary on the actual historical events (The History Channel extra on the original DVD) is much more interesting.

Thanks Bisc. I've added Dog Soldiers to my list. I'm popping in tomorrow.

You mean you've heard it and you think it's acceptable?

Christ, even my Dad noticed it was bad.

Listen to it again, the opening scene that is, and then replay the chapter using the german mono track and you'll see what I mean. That's how it's supposed to sound.

I took a chance on A Fistful of Dynamite for £3.99. Original release with mono, not the S.E with buggered audio. Doesn't have the three mins extra from the Italian print, the English variant of which is titled Duck, You Sucker(!), but I've never seen the film before so wasn't about to pay big to find out.

You mean like "Fuck You, Sucker"?

The comma placement changes the meaning.

I'll see if I can find out.

TBH unless it's a Mei Ah old school or Anchor Bay hack job which is so badly done I don't mind.

If they add new foley effects in which "I" can't notice or 90% of the time stick to the front channels then it's fine for me. Yes ideally ALL DVDs I should be allowed to choose but as it's not always the case then so be it.

Hold up I thought you didn't mind 5.1 remixes of Western films?

Not if they tamper with the foley. A simple spreading of a 1.0 to 2.0 or 5.1 I can handle, like Once Upon a Time in the West.

Grim, I was right: Duck, You Sucker. 8)

For some reason I've always read it as Duck You, Sucker :)

Of which many others hated.

Is there new foley in Vertigo then?
grim_tales wrote:Isn't it "Duck You, Sucker"? ;)
That doesn't even make any sense. It's never been called either title AFAIK.

Listen like I said and you'll hear for yourself.

Duck, You Sucker was the original English title. After flopping at the box office the film was retitled A Fistful of Dynamite.

Here's the sales link in case anyone has missed it:

http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/campaigns.d ... pGroupID=9

The first 7 pages when ordered by price are the big savings. I stopped looking when they got to £4.99 and above (8-30). I picked up:

Dog Soldiers - £3.49
Rear Window - £2.99
King Of Comedy - £2.99

The sale while decent for a HMV pricing really wasn't that exciting. We've all been spoilt with CD WOW and Play sales to the point where a £5.99 for a standard non-SE DVD really isn't exciting and nor shouldn't it be HMV and regular DVD prices are a rip off.

There were very few £2.99/£3.99 DVDs, less than I thought there would be. The real Sale prices have already been mentioned.

I did picked up yesterday:

* Spartacus £4.99 - In a way I'd have preferred the Criterion as it keeps it all on Disc 1 but the film is 197 minutes so splitting it maybe wasn't such a bad idea. Still DTS was the only real reason Universal split the film and that wasn't needed.

* Nerina Pallot - Fires £6.99 - I took a risk on this having only heard her first single which I like. Normally I completely ignore CD sales as they never compete with CD WOW but at only 0.24p more I figured why not.

I did have a £10 HMV Gift Voucher to get rid of so these two only cost me £1.97.

I did nearly pick up Gladiator: 3 Disc SE but the extras don't interest me (they're already very good on the 2 Disc sE), it's missing DTS and I really don't think it needs to be any longer. It's perfect as it is.
