New extras, but same old Studio Canal transfer and reportedly bad audio track.

I dunno bout this one, might try to track down the R1 first I guess.

The DVD Times review says the audio is now fixed. Personally I'd get this when it's cheaper for the commentary, more here:

Personally I thought it was eerie, the ending is good but otherwise it's not as good as most make out IMO. I should give it a second chance though.

Personally I never had a problem with the audio anyway.

Ah, I was just skim-reading it before and missed that part. Anyway the discusses it still being plagued by some distortion is but that is no big deal. Distortion is fairly common on mono tracks, I had to rewind and turn on the subs occasionally when watching Shane yesterday (terrific film BTW).

I'll decide for myself, but Mike Sutton's reviews tend to be right on the money for me.

Optimum SE added to Beav comparison. It wins hands down.

It does, much more than I was expecting. It also shows how bad the R1 is.

Actually the R1 transfer is pretty good, looked fine on my m8's projection set up when I took it round to watch the other month. This new SE definitely looks better though.

Some still reckon that the R1 is still better in the PQ and sound departments. A double-dip may be in order.

haineshisway wrote:I posted about this new region 2 in some other thread, I guess. I found the image on the region 2 very disappointing, compared to the region 1, which has much more accurate color - you can tell instantly in the main titles - on the region one the text is blue as it should be (and as it was in the release prints) - on the region 2 it's barely blue, more of a sickly color. And that sickly color impacts all the other color. Of course, the region 2 has some extras, so that's always nice and I'll keep it for that - but this is yet another case of people going on and on about how much better a transfer is when it isn't - I've been caught in this trap several times here, but I'll still keep taking the chance just in case once, just once, someone is right. :-)

Having owned both, I can confirm that the sound on the R1 is much better.

Haines and Michael (DVDtimes hardware reviewer) know their shit BTW.

Thanks Eva.

Personally I'd still opt for the UK R2 SE. It's not a big enough reason to get two versions IMO, it's an old film so neither will look great.
