The Madman General Thread!

Post by bradavon »

On this thread I'll list Madman's General (Region 4) decent titles, which are not bettered elsewhere.

If it's not mentioned whether it's NTSC-PAL or Film-PAL/Native-PAL it means I don't know. Please be aware it's NOT a definitive list but I'd like to make it definitive so please post any updates or corrections!

Their release of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai reportedly has a slightly better transfer than the R1 Artisan release, all the extras from the R1 and an exclusive "soundtrack theatre" thingy where you can hear rare tracks which are otherwise only on a rare long OOP Japanese OST. (see Michaeldvd review).

Their release of Down By Law is a complete port-over of the Criterion 2-discer and was sourced from a remastered hi-def transfer. Source: I own it. Tartan maybe putting out a similar release.

Asterix and Obelix Take on Caesar
Only version with original French audio and English subtitles.

Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra
Has DTS (not sure if in English or French) but definitely has French audio in some shape or form + English subs.
Not sure what the UK version's like.

Cheers Bisc and Eva for the Western titles.

Ong-Bak, Ghost in the Shell and Akira are Asian though so wrong thread but thanks I'll put them in the Asian one. I'll do my best to move them (grrr wish I could merge).

Their Beast Wars season boxsets are the best in the world. They have world exclusive extras - most notably numerous commentaries by the writers, producers, directors, etc of the show. I have no idea whether they're proper-PAL transfers or not though.

Thread split off to put it back on track. I'll add Beast Wars shortly thanks Eva.

EDIT: Updated. Madman.com.au is playing up again so images and confirmed extras are to follow.

Land of Plenty - No clue about whether it's native-PAL or not, but it does have a 5.1 track and unique extras. The recent R1 is interlaced poo and only has a DD2.0 track, but does have a director's commentary and deleted scenes. No R2UK DVD exists at this time (which is odd, considering the regard in which the director is held. Also the R1 has only been out for like a month. The R4 has been out for like a year already.).

It's nice to see that at least some actors have survived the trainwreck (quality wise) that was Dawson's Creek and can actually act. Teen soaps tend to only breed shit performances thanks to the trite quality of the written material (like Star Wars) and should not be taken as representation of an actor's actual ability (if they have any in the first place that is).

In the Realm of Senses
- Least cut/censored version the film with English subs. Non-anamorphic though.

The Eel - only release with the English subtitled Extended Cut; also the only release with the Extended cut aside from the R2J period. NTSC-PAL though, but I'd imagine that it still looks a zillion times better than this garbage.

Thanks again Eva.

Personally I reckon Katie Holmes is a decent actress better than Michelle Williams IMO. I thought she was great in "Pieces of April" and "Wonder Boys", the trailer for "Pieces of April" concentrated on the comedy but in fact it's as serious in places.

Very good little film.

She's gone a bit weird now she's marrying Mr Cruise though.
