V For Vendetta - 1 Disc £3.99 / 2 Disc SE £5.99

Post by bradavon »

The 1 Disc is part of HMV's Deal of the Day offering and is on offer until Sunday at 3pm:

http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/navigate.do?&pPageID=2445

It was The Matrix box set today at £12.99 but that's now been replaced by this.

The 2 Disc SE at £6.99 is here:

http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProd ... sku=565083

I've gone for the 2 Disc SE. Searching the otherwise cheapest I can find the 2 Disc SE is £11 from DVD Pacific but only 1-2 e-tailors stock it period, it looks to be almost OOP.

I've heard mixed reports but it looks worth a go.

It's also £6.99 here using DVD Times £1 Voucher Link (so £7.99 before vouchers): http://www.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2. ... ffid=15560

It's one of those annoying ones that the shit CD WOW search can't find.

My CD WOW R2 arrived today. Note I didn't say UK R2 because it's not.

AFAIK it's identical to the UK R2 2 Disc SE but has Arabic writing on the disc labels (not the main text but the usual legal warnings), doesn't say which disc is which (which is annoying) and when you plonk it in you're presented with every European language under the sun.

United Kingdom being well U in the alphabet is right on the last page. Next time I'll choose Australia :D.

The quality is fine but has an optional German dub not listed on the cover art (which is all in English).

Speaking of the cover art it has no British BBFC logos but they on the discs (as well as the Irish and Dutch ones). I suspect discs the release is an Eastern European one.

It's fine but if I'd known this I'd have got it from HMV.

Choose one of the more obscure European languages, you're less likely to be bombarded by the "YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CAR" anti-piracy ad that way.

Yup thats why I try not to even bother with the shitty pirate like Region 2's from cdwow anymore, as I have had too many shockers, they lie for me. They should say the exact country of origin, esspecially if you did research and wanted the UK version and you get palmed of with another version not exactly the same with about 24 languages eating the picture quality away.

A couple extra tiny stereo tracks (of major European language dub eg Spanish, French, German) and a couple dozen subtitle streams wouldn't have any major effect on video quality.

The only thing I don't like are player-generated captions (eg place names, dates) replacing the original film burnt-in captions. This is done so that lazy studios like MGM and Universal can accommodate as many PAL regions as possible with the one DVD.

The thing is a few transers are not the same as the UK versions I own a few of these off UK dvds and they have bugs and problems with the picture transfers like wrongly encoded blocking and breaking up that they didnt even notice, at least the UK cathces these problems before they bloody encode them :(

Still at least they dont have UK ratings all over the dvds! but they still look pirate like as they also dont have bar codes and have large sopaces on the back of them missing. Odd.

They only have 1-3 soundtracks, it's subs which you get 20+ but they take no space up.

To be fair CD WOW do clearly say they're an international supplier and never say you're going to get the UK DVD. The DVDs are far from pirates, that's just silly. I'd prefer the UK DVD too but it's no big deal.

I by and large receive UK DVDs from them too.

Good idea, cheers. I'm sure that's all that menu is for.

You're probably right here. I've not seen the UK DVD but the Eastern European V for Vendetta I receive doesn't look as sharp as I was expecting.

V for Vendetta has a bar code (it's even in DVD Profiler) and ratings on the DVDs, but not on the cover.

What's a sopace though?

Space, blank space where things suposed to be (like a bar code) many have big pieces of space and it looks odd, like they forgot to put details on the back of the box.

The thing is many times CDWOW have pictures of the UK dvds, with ratings logo etc.. that to me say its the UK dvd, when you get em they have no logos, so to me thats lies :D still some are pretty much identical, but hell it would pee me off if it happened again, it hasnt happened to me for a while now as I have avoided certain companies from now on Warner is the biggest grey area company.

Thanks I thought you meant space but didn't know what you mean. I do now, yeah those are odd.

Very fair point I agree with.

Yeah WB love doing this. At least V for Vendetta has all the UK 2 Disc extras.

Aww crap I got the UK dvd of Hostel today, its not the UK dvd at all! its Czech/ Polish! bastards, on the site it had the UK dvd with the ratings logo, this is not the UK dvd at all and I cannot argue as hell they took it off the site. Cheapo Region 5 dvds are getting on my tities. Still I will check it and if its got one bug its going back!

Personally I'd say you can complain as they'll know they used to have a different picture. It's a fair point you're raising.

It's a right pain to send stuff back to CD WOW now with all this Cyprus bollocks and then eventually they'll give you an e-voucher refund on your postage costs. Meaning the next DVD I get I'll be wasting money (I'll have to use their e-voucher to redeem my cash instead of the new £2 one)

I have sent them a firm email complaining about this situation of ripping off customers with cheapo sub pirate not UK dvds, and complained about the pathetic situation about sending dvds to Cyprus! Freepost should come back etc..

Doubt I will get any response to my satisfaction, but hell this is about the last time I get a dvd filled up with 18 european soundtracks! and cut back extras becuase of it.

I watched the film, the picture seemed ok if a bit blocky in places and had a lot of white specs, no idea if thuis is the same as the UK picture mind you, but you shoudnt notice white specs on a new films transfer thats for sure.

Rub it in :D and you have 4 commentaries too instead of Russian, Polic and Czhecer sondtracks in 5.1 :D

still I will have to just keep this version as its not worth sending back :( as I will loose a few quid by not being able to use vouchers on next order. So I will have to like it and lump it, I guess thats what they expect most people to do sadly.

You can put it on eBay. Just say it's Region 2, people will assume it's UK R2 and will be more than happy with it.

You'll get your £1.99 back and maybe make enough to then by the DVD you want.
