PHWOAR at Gong Li in that pic.
Basically the geishas have been blatantly modified to appeal to the west.
...and you're surprised? Rob Marshall said he did this ib interviews months ago. Don't you guys watch much telly (aside from your awful soaps like Coronation St)?
As for your second question. For example say an Indian guy and an Iraqi guy. I find it pretty easy to spot the difference but I've come across a lot of people who would be like "nah they're both the same surely."
IMO, if someone can't tell the vast physical characteristics apart of two races that look NOTHING alike like Indians and Iraqis they're certified fuckwits. I understand how it's easy to confuse very similar peoples like Chinese with Koreans or Japanese, etc; or Indians and Pakistanis (technically those two are the same race though, just have different religious beliefs), but the Indians and Iraqis?! I find it mindblowing that people that ignorant exist.

Let's face it Marshall was not the man to choose if you want authenticity. Other American director's would've have given the film much more authenticity.

It's Marshall + Hollywood not America + Hollywood.
I even read somewhere that the producers wanted to tone down the white powder as they felt that their target audience would find it off-putting.
It's clear they have. The film never explained why Michelle Yeoh's character has no white powder at all.

Do Geisha's in real life also talk back so readily?

And this struck me as odd: The film goes to great length to explain that the Geisha's aren't seen naked by their clients except on the night of losing their virginity so why on earth would they be naked at the end together? That bath house scene.

As for your second question. For example say an Indian guy and an Iraqi guy. I find it pretty easy to spot the difference but I've come across a lot of people who would be like "nah they're both the same surely."
You must know some really dumb people as they look completely different, different accent too.

I do get confused on occasion between Korean and Japanese people. Funnily enough not in films but when meeting them in real life. Thai and Vietnamese look almost identical too, except the Vietnamese also have links to China.

Any links? I'd be interested to read it from Marshall.

Did I say I was surprised?

I personally don't watch much TV no. Why, do you? Interesting...

We live in an ignorant world. Why are you surprised?

Can people quote the right sections from other members posts please.

What really pissed me off was how Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh where shown in the end credits and then RIGHT AT THE END Gong Li gets a mention under "And introducing" as if she's never acted before

Does Zhang Ziyi really prefer Ziyi Zhang? This is what Mark Kermode said, it doesn't sit well for me.

Well, Zhang is her last name and in China when you address someone, you always go by their last name first. So my guess would be that she prefers to be called Ziyi Zhang when she's in the West.

I've read "The Pillow Book" which was written by real life Geisha Sei Shōnagon (965-1010s?). Among other experiences she writes about moments where she and other geishas would talk back, but in form of poetry. Just like rappers dissing each other on battles, lol.

Hence why I asked. It was Zhang Ziyi in the west up until recently too!

That parts authentic then.

It strikes me as a stark contrast to see them bitching at each other and then be all effeminate "wouldn't hurt a mouse" around their client.

There are several factors which may influence whether or not I see this film.

Mainly,...does Gong Li's kit come off in this film?

What do you think?

Interesting how we're all lusting for Gong Li instead of Zhang Ziyi. She's old enough to be most of ours mother!

It's incredible how well Asian women age. I wonder why that is.

It's not mentioned in the text article, but if I remember correctly it's mentioned in the streaming video report (which I saw on TV awhile back).

Did anyone expect this not to happen?

The Chinese government bans 99% of films made by non-Chinese about China, feature China or feature Chinese nationals in some. China is hardly a democracy.

The funny thing is all it will do is make more money for the Chinese bootleggers. I'm sure they're laughing all the way to the bank.

What do you mean by "on now"? Does that mean like it's not modern or appropriate or so?

Why? Just because it's 2006? Communism might be instable, but so is communism. The only difference is that democracy protracts and in the end doesn't last.

Take Germany for example. Every 4 years you have new votes and it drags on and parties keep on switching and switching. In the last 8 years, the SPD with Schröder as the chancelor might not have been able to reduce the number of unemployed people in Germany, but they were going after an agenda which would eventually have made things better. People are just too impatient and went to vote for the CDU, the SPD's opposition. Of course they were always against Schröder's agenda and as soon as they came into power they stopped the agenda and are now trying a plan of their own in order to reduce unemployment.

How can a country develop properly into one direction if there is a constant switch between the 1st gear and the reverse gear? Communism is not the answear and the Chinese government has so many intrigues, but at least after years they are getting somewhere. In regards to economic development they are country number 2, if not even 1 in the world. In proportion to other countries China has internationally the highest percentage of poor people that are making it into middle-class and middle-class making it to the upper-middle-class. Why? Because there fathers and grand-fathers have suffered enough for them to make it possible. Over the years they went into one direction and if you ask me, I rather live in a Communist country where I have high chances of having a good job, than in a democratic 'free' world in which I have to fear that I'll have to live on welfare due to the increasing redundancy.
