Most french people don't know what "Le Croquant" means, so I suppose you're right.

Jacquou is just a first name.
"Croquant" comes from the verb "Croquer", which means "to eat/devour".
If memory serves, "Les Croquants" is what peasants used to call the nobles in the 18th century (give or take a few hundred years ).
So: Jacquou the Noble (sort of).

He has a very limited range, but I think he was OK in stuff like Bad Boys, Kiss of the Dragon and Patriot.
