Xbox: error 16 :(

Post by Yi-Long »

Cant fucking believe it. A few months ago I kept having problems with my HDD, but that kinda fixed itself, and now I get code 16, which apparently means my Xbox cant find the internal clock or whatever.

I'm mostly upset because when I try to look at solutions, it's apparently mostly a problem to people that had their Xbox modded. Mine isnt!

Plus the solution is a HUGE complicated deal, with having to open up your xbox, disconnecting the hdd, attaching the hdd to your pc while loading a boot-up disc, etc etc... way too complicated for me.

Why cant Microsoft make fucking proper hardware!?!? Fucking assholes :(

I do know then when I do get a 360, I'll get a modded one. I'm fed up with this shit.
Right now I'm looking at options to either have my current Xbox modded so it will probably be fixed as well, or just buying an already modded Xbox, but those seem rare nowadays.

But man, this sucks. Cant believe they even release suchs fucking pieces of shit, when they all break down so easily, and more importantly, without any provocation! I play the xbox, I am done with playing so I turn it off. Turn it back on a few hours later, and it's screwed! I didnt move it, didnt shake it, didnt turn it off while loading, didnt unplug, I just turned it off normally.

The guys who make these faulty consoles should be fucking shot in the face, multiple times, and then spit on!

I can help you out with that. I recovered from a similar problem on my faulty console. It is quite complicated though...

Thanks Monkey, but like you say, its very complicated and it would involve me buying some tools and opening stuff up and disconnecting crap and bascially run the risk of also fucking up my own pc etc etc.

I cant believe there isnt just a simple 'boot-up' cd or something which immediately fixes the problem. And what's even worse is that I didnt do anything to provoke this breakdown. It's just downright lousy hardware by Microsoft :(

I cant believe they are so fucking bad at making good quality hardware.

And buying a PS3 isnt really an option either, with hardly any interesting games out yet (although I'd probably buy a PS3 if it came packaged with Ratchet and Clank and Unchartered...)

I'm now looking at adverts for a 2nd hand Xbox. Preferably a modded one.
And as far as a 360 goed, Microsoft has lost my loyalty. I've been loyal for the original Xbox and buying all their games, and suddenly it craps out on me ...
With the quality and pricing of the 360 still so bad and high, I wont make the same mistake twice.

Gawd I feel horney...

Anyway, I've put down 2 bids on modded Xbox's, here in the neighbourhood. One bid for 80 bucks and another for 100 bucks for another modded Xbox. I'll see if I get a response and I have some further questions etc.

Goddamn btw... this means I've lost all my great Pro Evo goals, and my Ninja Gaiden save-games :( Not to mention pretty much every other game I've made progress in.

I though the whole idea of having a HD meant you wouldnt need memory cards anymore, but when Microsoft fucks up their hardware, you're still screwed :(

Down go slamming the build quality of the Xbox1, it broke down after years of service. Not unusual with electronic equipment.

360's on the other hand have been known to breakdown within a 1-6 months of purchase.

Bought a 2nd hand modded Xbox tonight.

it comes with an excecuter 2 chip, but sadly no mediacenter is installed, and it isnt region-free (yet?)
Anyone has any idea on how to install a mediacenter on my xbox?

Also, is there any way to get the info from my old HD onto this new xbox? Maybe through a cable or something?

Look up some guides/tutorials on Xbox-scene.com on how to FTP into the Xbox.

Here's what I did a couple years ago:-
1. Hooked up my Xbox to my ADSL router/ethernet switch.
2a. Downloaded the Evolution-X dashboard.
b. Configured the settings file to my router settings.
c. Burn it to a DVD-RW disc (CD-Rs/CD-RWs have very limited compatibility with Xbox DVD drives. Unless yours has a Samsung drive, like mine.) and booted said disc on my Xbox. Tried to FTP into the Xbox from my PC.

Rinse and repeat a-c until you've successfully FTP'ed into the Xbox.

3. COPY the configured EvoX dash to my Xbox's C: drive.
4. Downloaded XBMC (as well other stuff like emulators, roms, ports of Duke3D, Quake 2, etc) and install it to my Xbox's E: drive.

You can find the necessary compiled binaries for all these on http://www.xbins.org. You'll need to visit their IRC channel everytime you want access to their FTP servers (to prevent leeching). This sounds like a pain in the arse, but it's necessary the majority of homebrew Xbox software is compiled with pirated programs from Microsoft's dev kits. Thus the compiled the programs are illegal (them in their raw uncompiled source forms are perfectly legal).

Oh and if you need a DVD region patched MS dashboard, then I can upload mine for you.

In theory, yes. Unlock the HDD of old Xbox (as the partitions where savegames are stored are locked); copy the saves to your PC; unlock the HDD of your new Xbox and then copy the saves to the appropriate locations.

Or you could not bother unlocking the second new HDD, & just transfer the files across from your PC using FTP instead. :)

I doubt that there's a new HDD in Yi's Xbox, most probably just the 8-10GB stock one. So it wouldn't be as simple as you say. When it comes to the stock HDD, you can't access those partitions where an Xbox stores its save games (and custom soundtracks) unless the HDD has been unlocked.

His new XBox has a modchip so he should have no problem using FTP to get into the HDD.

He still won't be able access the locked partitions where savegames are stored though, without unlocking the HDD (provided that it's the stock one).

Thanks guys. That all sounds very complicated and alot of work.

Yesterday I emailed some guy(s) who are known for modding consoles and asked them what it would cost to mod, install a new HD, fix error 16 etc, and got a repy that they'd fix and mod for 30, and also install a new HD for 30 (probably have to also buy a new HD myself), so I'm considering those options.

My 2nd hand modded Xbox just has the executer chip on it, but still the old, original 8 GB HD, so I guess I wont be able to access it through the pc (yet). Plus I probably also cant acces my old broken down xbox through the pc (yet).

They replied in their email that even with error 16, and with fixing that AND modding and installing a new HD, my saves would be saved.

Just got off the phone with the mod guy. First thing I need to do now is buy 2 internal HD's, 250 gb or something.

Any stuff I need to think of before buying them? I believe he said I need to buy a IDE Parralel ATA HD?

Why 2 internal HDDs? Where would the second one fit? Its a compact space inside. Are you replacing the DVD drive with a second HDD or something? I don't think thats a good idea.

Yeah you will need a PATA drive. The XBox came out before SATA drives became the norm.

You also have to make sure that the drive is compatible with the XBox, if you're doing a softmod. I don't think this matters if you're getting a chip...

2 HD's for 2 xbox's, as I'm also getting the error 16 xbox fixed and equiped with a soft-mod and a big HD.

So it comes down to
1: my old xbox, which wasnt modded, and got the error 16: I'm getting that one softmodded, and it will have a new bigger HD.

2: The 2nd hand modded xbox I got. That one is chipped (excecuter 2.1), but doesnt have a big HD. I want that one fixed with a bigger HD.

So I need to buy a new internal HD for both machines. And my 1st xbox will also be softmodded. Both xboxes will also get the mediacenters and emulators installed etc. And I really hope the guy that fixes the error 16 xbox, will be able to get my save-games back, cause there are some gorgeous goals I scored in Pro Evo, plus obviously lots of other progress and unlocked stuff in other games.

How can I check if a certain drive is compatible with my xbox?

You'll blacklisted from Live for sure with those large HDDs. No great loss though, who goes onto Live with an Xbox1 any more? Probably only a small handful of people still playing Halo 2.

Like you said, I wont be playing online anymore anyway :)
My Xbox live subscription already ended in october or something... and I will only renew it if and when I get a 360, which can still be a while... :)

I strongly suggest paying for Live Gold with the pre-paid cards and not with a credit card. Otherwise you'd have to jump through a whole bunch of hoops if you decided to cancel your subscription.

Yeah I know and yeah I will :)
I have a 13 month subscriptioncard already lying around, which came with Halo 3 (60 euro for both)

Dude, sell Halo 3. Like Halo 2, it's a massive disappointment. (None of the Halos are terrible though, get a clue.)

I didnt like Halo 2, and I probably wont like Halo 3. I wasnt even planning on buying it, but a website messed up and offered Xbox Live and 12 months of Live for 60 bucks, so I ordered it.

I dont care for Halo.

Fair enough that didn't like Halo, but you've definitely said in the past that Halo 1 & 2 were shit games. They never even near approached the level of bad quality.

I utterly loathe Final Fantasy 7 and it certainly a majorly overrated game. But that doesn't make it a colossal turd.
